Are [rear bench seats] available now [for a Boston Whaler 170 MONTAUK]? When I bought my 2008 Boston Whaler 170 MONTAUK, the dealer told me that a rear bench seat would be an option on the 2009 model and could be ordered for 2008 models. I found some pictures but not sure if those were prototypes or not. I didn't make it to the boat show this year. I didn't see anything on the Boston Whaler website.

I also inquired about that new rear bench seat. I seen it at my local dealer and it is VERY COOL! The back rest folds all the way forward for a sun deck and the bottom was enclosed for storage. My dealer said I could order it for my 2006 170. He said the price was approx $2000.00. I think its alot but very tempting.

I didn't think the 2006 170 Montauk had the needed area of wood under the deck and gunwales to add the supports needed for the new rear seat. I'd be very interested to see the seat your dealer said could be installed on a 2006 170 Montauk, actually installed on that model/year.

I also would be very interested in whether the rear seat can be properly mounted in a 2006 170. If so, I would get one for my 2007 w/in the next 3 years. But I believe it is as GreatBay says regarding the location (or lack) of wood for mounting one on previous model years.

Where is this wood located?

Do you think it can be retrofitted to a Classic Montauk, too?

TeePee, wood diagrams can be found at http://www.whalerparts.com for your Boston Whaler model and year.

Mambo,
The 170 and classic Montauk hulls differ quite a bit. Being that the 170 hulls are wider, and assuming the bench seat is wider too, I think a retro-fit would be impossible without somehow making the seat less wide (for starters). That said there are already rear seat options for the classics that are out there. I'd be more inclined to pursue those options rather than going down the mysterious and elusive road that is the 170 rear bench seat.
