My 170 Montauk has a 15.5" Destroyer style steering wheel. I am thinking of swapping it out for a 13" stainless wheel with 3 'spokes' and a turning knob.

The 15.5" seems like it is just too big, and is too close to the engine controls. Has anyone else done this switch? Does the 13" seem to small for the boat?

It is all personal preference.

Might want to get some fuzzy dice and a bobble head hula doll too.

I ordered my wheel yesterday after getting an adapter for the BW laser etched aniversary edition steering nut I bought.

I thought the blinged out stering nut would be a good replacement for the fuzzy dice.

Hey, its all good - bling is bling and it aint nuthin but a thing - Beauty's in the eyes, so you gots to personalize when you stylize lest you be trivialized, minimized and marginilized if you don't properly customize. :-)

As my Swedish grandmother would say - Oy Vey! (Ha!)

Actually talking about the "blinged out" steering nut instead of fuzzy dice.

re: BW laser etched aniversary edition steering nut I bought.

Did you special order the steering nut through the dealer?

SC Joe posted 02-08-2009 08:36 PM ET (US)     Profile for SC Joe  Send Email to SC Joe
Yes, I bought it through the dealer. This engraved nut is used on the larger 2008 boats with the "vision" style steering wheels.

One note: The factory teleflex steering uses a 1/2-20 threaded shaft to secure the wheel. The nut from BW is a 5/8-18 thread. I purchased an adapter from McMaster that will allow the nut to be used on the 1/2-20 threads.

Joe - is it possible for you to post a picture of this nut?

Thanks,
Max

Sure. It's sitting on the plastic washer that came with it.

Yep - better'n fuzzy dice any day. :-)

Thanks Joe - I had done a google search and what-not but couldn't find anything. Quite a handsome piece of hardware actually.

Thanks!

Now maybe I should paint the inside of the boat light blue :)

Here are some pics of before and after. I changed out the wheel tonight. I noticed the factory wheel has a sticker that said "made in China": So much for buying American.

Feejer said the hardest part was removing the old wheel-he was right. These are pretty crapy pics, but I think I'm going to like the new wheel. The smaller diameter makes it easier to get to the key switch and of course, the steering knob makes it easier to turn, especially when not directly behind the wheel.
