[Seeks information] about a fairly loud whistling sound at idle [from a Mercury 200-HP VERADO Gen-I motor] with the cowling in place (on a 2004 Boston Whaler 220 DAUNTLESS). [Can the cause of the whistle be due to a need for] new end cap bushings for the supercharger? [The Mercury VERADO Gen-I 200-HP motor] was badly over-filled with oil and run for some time. doctweak

I do not recall any prior reports of a Mercury VERADO Gen-I motor having a loud whistling noise. Does the pitch of the whistling noise change with engine speed?

I do not recall any prior reports of replacement of components of the supercharger on a VERADO. The supercharger, while initially suspected to be perhaps a fragile component in the VERADO motor, appears to have shown remarkable durability.

If the motor was delivered with a 2004-model year Boston Whaler, I imagine that the warranty coverage on the motor has either expired or is near the end of the coverage period. What is your situation with the Mercury original motor warranty coverage?

Service for the Mercury VERADO can only be provided by a subset of Mercury dealers who have become trained and qualified on the VERADO. If your local Mercury dealer is a trained and certified dealer for the VERADO, he ought to be able to resolve this problem with the help of Mercury's service support specialists.

If you want advice independent of your dealer, Mercury has a customer relations telephone line which can usually offer good advice about the VERADO. It is often cited by other VERADO users as a good point of contact with Mercury for service related inquiries. I believe the telephone number is

920-929-5000

Call that number. Be sure you have the serial number of the VERADO motor. They should be able to give you some independent advice.

Many VERADO Gen-I motors were subject to a field service bulletin which affects the float switch in the fuel supply module (FSM). In 2006 Mercury began a campaign to recall and replace the fuel supply module in certain VERADO engines. The serial number range is believed to be

1B152085 thru 1B206576

You might check your engine to see if it is part of this recall campaign.
