I ran into a local Boston Whaler for sale, a suprise here in Utah. It is a 1996 17ft Dauntless. It is an open bow and in very nice shape with a 130 Yamaha.

I have never seen this model until today so I did alittle research and found out that the previous year, in 1995 when it is introduced, it won Boat of the Year by a major publication.

Is anyone familar with this boat, how well it runs and handles, any paticular quirks, anything at all? It is such a nice little Whaler I am trying to find a reason to buy it.

Thanks

Sterling,

The Dauntless 17 is a nice boat. One of our neighbors on Bainbridge Island has had one for years. It is not the archetypical Whaler but about as nice a little bow rider as you will ever find.

Here is one, of many, good threads discussing the Dauntless 17:

I purchased a 1997 Dauntless 17 last March and drove it to my lake in Vermont. She has a 125 Merc 2 stroke and cruises well, pulls wakeboards and tubes with ease. Just adjust the trim to smooth the ride once on plane. Lots of room.

I have owned a 1996 17'Dauntless/ 1997 125 Mercury 2 stroke since 2003 when I bought it used. My sons and I were focused on looking for a cc because we planned on doing mostly fishing. After months of looking my son told me about this dual console that had been in the classifieds for some time. We went out with the previous owner one Saturday, liked it and bought it on the spot. We love this boat. Spacious and, very important to me, safe. As a previous BW owner (13 & 15) I am sold on their quality, solid, safe construction.
We've never missed the cc. We find that we do more relaxing outings with family/friends than we do fishing, although it's excellent for that as well (7 passenger capacity within specified total weight - although we usually total 4 to 5; huge for a boat this size, plus lots of storage space). Original owner had a nice two battery w/ switch set up, plus fuel filter, etc. Our typical outings are to islands some four miles from marina. Atl/Caribbean waters usually 3-4 feet, boat takes it in stride, very dry. Of course all use since we bought it has been salt water. We take good care of boat & motor - stored in dry-stack, flush, fresh water cleaning after EVERY outing no matter how brief, spray CRC on the engine, lube 2/3 times per year, transmission oil 2x/yr. change impeller, sparks, fuel filter once a yr no matter how little we've used it - however, we're not slaves to the boat if you understand my meaning. We're now headed into the "winter" months when we don't use it much because of higher seas coming from the North Atl; seas for this weekend are forecast 5-6 feet and rising - a little uncomfortable for my taste.
All in all, we have been very satisfied with this boat. Hope this info is of help.
