Author Topic:   Adding cleats forward on a Montauk

I would like to add some cleats to the forward sides on my Montauk. It has them on the rear but not toward the front. There is the front cleat adjacent to the anchor well but that is not convenient when tieing at the dock. I would be way more convenient to have cleats on the side fore and aft.

To that end, anyone know where to get matching cleats or should I contact Whaler?

Al,

I would contact Chuck Bennette with Whaler customer service, he can tell you the OEM supplier for the cleats. I would also check the "wood locating diagram" that came with your owner's packet (can also be found on-line through the BW owners section). This will help you to find the best forward mounting location for the additional cleats.

On another note, I found that I could run two lines off the forward cleat when I would wet-slip my Montauk. This worked fine for me, but was not real convenient. You could also tie-off at the forward rail bases, if the cleat idea does not work out. Hey, did you find the tackle drawers (w/out dividers) you were looking for?

Robert,
thanks, my boat doesn't have the front rails. I have the trolling motor option and eliminated the rails.

On the boxes, I went to the Bass pro and found some with fewer dividers but none without the dividers. I will visit a store near Chicago next time I am there and check them out.
Thanks
Al

Called Chuck at Whaler and left message. Immediate call back with the info I need. Looks like the cleats are readily available via Attwood Marine dealers - cost about $18 each. Cheaper than I expected!

Al,

I think this will be an easy add-on, since you don't have the forward rails. You can probably mount the cleats in a location that already has the imbedded backing for the rail bases. Just don't forget to check out the wood locating diagram, this will show exactly where the embedded backing is located. If you can't locate the diagram in your owner's packet or on the BW website, let me know and I can forward the link to you. Let's see some pics (i.e. "boat porn") when you are done!

Al-

I also would be interested to see some photos of this once you are done. I have an '08 Montauk without the rails and have considered doing a similar setup. Thanks for pioneering this one!!

I had my dealer install my amidship cleats.
