I've read a couple folks have installed tackle boxes like the one in their console under the steps at the stern. Has anyone come up with a configuration to accomplish this and keep the factory-installed hatch doors in place? The additional tackle storage would be great but I don't want to replace these solid hatch doors with the crappy molded plastic ones.

I have looked into this. The best way is to remove the covers and frames and replace with an SSI Plastics tackle drawer and frames. The SSI's are ABS plastic with an acrylic coating. This offers better sun protection before going to a molded fiberglass door. You will have to cut the opening a little wider to fit the stock SSI tackle drawers.

Thank you; I see on their website they come with the 'slam' latches like the existing doors have. This is exactly what I need.

I'm trying to see which covers you are looking at. Can you give a product number or a link for the website at ssi. I've considered better utilizing that space too. Of course it would have to be water tight.

The opening will have to be modified slighty depending on which product you choose.

The 2 and 3 drawer units don't appear to have the slam latches. Maybe they will stay shut ok. I have the same type of 2 drawer mounted on my console and have never had a problem. As far as water tightness, the drawer unit itself is a solid moulded piece. A bead of silicone would surely prevent water intrusion into the bilge area in the event of a swamping. There's a clearer picture on Overton's:

Here's a unit with a poly door and stainless latch. It looks to be a good match.
