Soon to be new owner of Dauntless 18, 2001. I will be keeping it in a slip for the summer, hence the need for covers. Where is a good place to pick up a cover for the center console, and hopefully seat as well? I am north of Boston if anyone knows local places. Otherwise online. Any tips on keeping this boat in the water? I assume it's self bailing, leave the bilge on auto?

I found a very nice console and RPS cover for my Dauntless on e-bay. They were used, in great shape, and cheap compared to new. Mills and other companies have the Whaler patterns or a local canvas shop can you make you some out of Sunbrella fabric.

Will you have access to shore power?

If so, you might wish to rig a "battery tender" to the battery that operates the bilge.

You can probably get away with a standard heavy duty extension cord and a marine co adapter plug instead of the very heavy cord sold at West Marine - your marina guidelines may or may not allow it - but if just keeping your batteries charged, it should be enough.

My 2002 Dauntless 180 is self-bailing for the most part, but some rain water is directed to the bilge rather than overboard. This is primarily any water that would enter the transom rod holders or the rear seat cup holders. Keep in mind, however, that the 2001 18 Dauntless and the 2002 Dauntless 180 are not the same boat.

As far as covers go, you can contact Mills Canvas ( www.millscanvas.com ) who can send you pre-made covers, or you can contact a local canvas shop and have the covers custom made. Either way will probably cost you about the same. You can ask around your local marinas for a good local canvas maker.
