I am not quite ready but I am thinking about up-sizing from my Dauntless 14, next year soonest. For now I am gathering information on the Outrage 17' and 18' hulls which seem to best fit my needs. I wouldn't be interested in anything older than about 1995. Any information about the hull design changes in the later models would be appreciated. What are your thoughts about these two hulls? Are there weak points of the design or what to look for other than the usual hull inspection? What power would be best? I have a need for speed so 45 MPH or more is ideal.

I'm very happy with my Dauntless 14 but I would like to have something that will provide a softer ride in short wavelength chop and also be able to handle inshore bigger water ie Lake Ontario. Thanks in advance for your remarks.

Here are the old web pages for the 17' and 18'.

This particular 18' model was manufactured in 1999 and 2000. I dont' belive there were any changes between those two years.

I've owned a 2000 18' for 10 seasons, it's a great boat. It's too short to offer a truly smooth ride in the typical 3 to 4 foot square waves we get on Lake Michigan, but it does well. In shorter chop it's a beast. I've been on boats 4 - 6 feet longer that didn't give a noticeably better ride. A few owners on this forum have had this model with 135 HP outboards and reported good results, I've got a 150 and don't see a need for more (they're rated for up to 200 HP), but I would not repower with less horsepower. It's heavy spud (2,500 pounds) and wide (8+ feet) and is a significant load to tow(4,000+ pounds). I've seen 42-44 MPH on my GPS, I'm sure there's a few more MPH there but I've never really hammered it and looked for a maximum, not really my thing. As the years go by I've become more and more convinced they didn't make many of them, I've only seen two others in the flesh.

I'm not positive of this, but believe this 17' model was only made in 1999. I've never seen one, but have heard glowing reviews. Compared to the 18' it's certainly less of a load to tow (800 lbs. lighter and only 7' wide), less HP needed, but still a nice size for Lake Ontario. Hopefully a 17' owner will chime in.

Ah, looking for a boat, that's half the fun.

Dave -

From 1996-1999, there is the Outrage 17 II. It has the accu-track hull design. This model was a new design and different than the Outrage 17 I that was produced from 1990-1995.

While many Outrage 17 II's came with 115 hp engines, owners recommend the 135 hp for better performance.

This is my 1996 Outrage 17 II. Great boat, dry ride for the most part...
