I have a 2000 21 conquest. I noticed that the screws that attach the hinge to the cover behind the pedestal seat(cooler) were loose. I tried tightening the screws(machine threads), but they wouldn,t tighten. Is there a nut back there? I hope so. I dont thik that they would have used a machine thread with no nut behind it. Or did they?

Check the Reference section or search for Barrel Nuts or Sex Bolts. I have been replacing them on my hatches with Stainless Steel ones.

If I correctly understand what you write, you're asking about the three screws that hold each hinge to the lid, not the two screws that hold the same hinge to the surface on which the pedestal seat is mounted. If my understanding is correct, then those three (per hinge) #10-24x5/8" Phillips oval head screws go into #10-24 Phillips flat head barrel nuts inserted into the underside of the lid. To have any chance of tightening the screws holding the hinge to the lid, you will also need to hold the nuts. If you are fortunate, simply using two screwdrivers, one to turn the screws and one to hold the barrel nuts, will solve your problem.
If you boat in salt water, as I do, then you may be less fortunate and find that the barrel nuts have rotted away. For complete info on the barrel nuts, and an effective fix (for me) for the loose screws/rotted barrel nuts, see the continuouswave Reference section:

I have a 1999 Conquest and the barrel nuts rotted away on practically all of my hatches in salt water use. Get stainless steel ones and start replacing them-even the ones that are not bad, because after about 10 years they'll go too.

I thought all the hardware was suposed to be 316 stainless steel?

Those nuts were brass or some kind of a composite metal. They oxidized fast in salt water.

Thanks for the heads up! I mostly have been boating in brackish water, so not so many corrosion issues to date.
I can not believe they did not put any gas strut on the starboard floor fishbox on deck. There is one on the anchor locker.
Anyone have a part no. of a gas strut they may have retrofitted to this box?
Passengers are always slamming it shut underway. It's also a safety hazard in heavy seas.

The gas strut on the anchor locker is not stainless steel. Mine lasted one season. I love my Whaler, but I am not happy with a lot of the ways that they went cheap with the hardware. Whalers are suposed to be salt water boats. If they claim 316 stainless steel hardware, what happened to the barrel nuts?
