I have a 1996 Outrage 19/20 which is a similar but different boat with a 9.9 Mercury 4 stroke kicker. The kicker is mounted using a fixed bracket from North River Boats. North River makes welded aluminum hulled boats in the Pacific Northwest. The bracket looks like a 1 ft cube sink tub made of thick Aluminum plate. It is very solid and much tougher than the whaler hull and about the same price (with shipping) as other brackets. The bracket is bolted through the transom. The transom has foam, so an access plate on the inner hull was needed to tighten the nuts. I have a work prop on the kicker, top speed is the hull speed of around 5-6 mph. I troll on Lake Michigan around 3 mph. Only issue is the added weight, which makes the stern heavy and changes boat handling and trailering. This is also complicated by the weight of my main 225 Yamaha engine. I’ve tee this off my fuel system. Fuel consumption is great, I estimate with a floscan about 7.7 mpg at WOT. I think an 8 hp kicker would also work fine, I found the Mercury used (and somewhat disassembled) on Craigslist. It has been a great addition, I use the kicker a lot more hours than the main engine. |
