I purchased a 2003 170 Montauk in 2006 and have been very happy with it. The person that owned it before me left it out in the New Jersey Coast Sun open 24/7 with no cover and the grey fuel line is showing signs of UV damage so I am looking into replacing it along with the primer bulb. I went out last weekend and purchased a new 2011 Moeller Universal fuel line with bulb however, it won't work. The fuel line coming from the tank and under the floor is a 3/8" diameter A-1 rated fuel line, which I understand is the right thing to have with Ethanol, that goes directly into the primer bulb. The grey line that is going from the bulb to the engine is a 5/16" diameter. I can't find a primer bulb that is 3/8" on one side (inlet) and 5/16" on the other (outlet).

Does this sound like a factory install, or has someone rigged this up? Anybody with a 170 have this hook-up?

I don't like the plastic fuel fittings on Moeller's primer bulbs. They are too small in I.D. for the size indicated. I recently removed a brand new one from my boat, and replaced it with a Mercury bulb, rated for either 5/16" or 3/8" size hose. If you compare the two bulbs, you will see the Mercury bulb has much larger inside diameter fittings for more fuel flow. The Evinrude bulbs also have larger I.D fittings.

Get a Mercury/Quicksilver fuel bulb, and the inlet end will fit the 3/8" diameter fuel hose in your tunnel, and will also accomodate the Moeller 5/16" hose on the outlet.

It seems to me that 5/16" line should have been used for the entire length from portable tank to engine.

I received a report from my Mercury dealer that Mercury's older grey/silver 5/16" fuel hose did not hold up well to alcohol after five or more years of exposure, and should be removed. I recently changed out all of mine which was over ten years old.

Thank you for the info. Did you get the Mercury bulb from a dealer or internet? I don't think I will use anything from Moeller. The brand new bulb/fuel line was their latest 2011 model but the grey line was only rated as B-1, not the A-1 or A-2 as I have read about the new fuel lines.

As far as the 3/8" line. I'm not sure if the previous owner had someone run the 3/8" A-1 rated fuel line from under the seat to the engine, or if it came from the factory that way since the fuel line goes down through the tunnel under the floor and comes out on the side of the splash well at the engine.
