Author Topic:   205 Conquest cabin ventilation

Hi guys! I can smell some gas in the cabin of my new (second-hand) 205 conquest. I have pluged the hole in the battery box (where water should drain) but still there is some smell. It appears only if the door has been closed for a day or something so there can not be a big "hole" where the smell turns up to.

Has anyone else faced this "problem"? Mine opinion is that there are too meagerly ventilation in the cabin... What does other 205 onwers think?

Sorry about my english. Try to understand what I'm saying :)

Does the Conquest 205 have a plastic tank? If so, I believe that this is quite common in Whalers with plastic tanks.

That's a normal condition with the plastic fuel tank.

I'm new to my 205 too. I noticed the same thing last weekend while installing the new battery slide out tray. I left my plug out just in case that hold need to drain so that may account for the problems. I wondered if the fumes are finding their way through the rod holder tubes that extend from the gunnel to the cabin area. The fumes were not overpowering but at the same time the temperature is still pretty mild here in Northern Wisconsin.

Mine has a faint gasoline smell when closed for an extended time. I open the cabin door and both port windows and it goes away quickly. It has never been strong enough to cause concern. I do leave the cabin plug out of mine.

One thing that may be worth a try is an air dryer dehumidifier. Although there main purpose is to keep your cabin dry in case of moisture issues, it will keep the air circulating which helps keep smells from laying dormant.

I noticed a similar smell mixed with a stale cabin smell in our 25 walkaround and a friend told me to try one of these circular dome air dryers from West Marine. To my surprise it worked perfectly and keeps the cabin functioning no matter how long we leave it closed.

The classic cabin whalers are a little different and offer teak doors with the slants so it allows fresh air to enter into the cabin. Its minimal however and without the fan the smell will overtake the amount of fresh air entering the cabin. The dehumidifier seems to keeps it fresh all the time. Does the 205 have an opening to allow fresh air or is closed pretty tight?

Do all the newest Whalers have plastic fuel tanks? My from circa 2000 is still an aluminum tank. I surmise move to plastic a cost saving measure, but I would expect better quality on a top tier boat.

Mambo,

My 1999 Dauntless 16 had a plastic tank. The quality was excellent and it withstood E-10 with no problems. it will allow some gasoline smell to escape but it's harmless. AFAIK Whaler is putting plastic tanks in it's boats today with perhaps an exception or two. These tanks have been bullet proof. Perhaps the E-10 problem was foreseen by Boston Whaler by 1999.

Florida Marine Tank (FMT), which was OEM for many of the aluminum tanks moved from Florida to North Carolina a few years ago. I wonder if Whaler stopped using them for new construction as a sub-vendor?

I think I should plug the holes from rod holders at first. If it doesn't help then I'm going to follow Martins advice!

I have an Eastport 205 and have not had this issue.

One of you referred to a slide out battery tray. Where did you get it? I would agree that this is a desired modification.
