I would like to add a pair of spring cleats on my Dauntless. With no means of adding a backing plate it appears that they can only installed with screws. Will this be a reliable installation? I sometimes leave the boat in the water on a set of dock whips and need the additional cleat.

Check the wood locating diagram for your model. The existing cleats are mounted at locations where there is additional support built in.

In case you are not aware, the wood location diagrams are on the fantastic whalerparts site. For 2004 models and newer, drill into the model year first. Prior to 2004 drill into the top level Wood Locating Models.

For my Dauntless 16', the wood location diagram on whalerparts has a truncated index. The paper diagram with the identical drawing number has the complete index. So on whalerparts, for transom items I can't tell how thick or whether wood/phenolic. No big deal, good thing I scanned my paper diagram.
