With a growing family, I hope to purchase a used 190 Montauk within the next three to five years. I really want one with a 150-HP outboard. It looks like a new one is around $40,000 with 150-HP. That's not going to happen.

Are there a lot of 190 Montauks with 150-HP out there? Was the 150-HP an option since the 20,000?

The first Montauk 190s were equipped with only 115 HP. That's what you are most likely to find on the used market. Underpowered in my opinion. Several owners on the forum immediately repowered with Yamaha or E-TEC 150-HP.

Yeah I have a feeling its going to be a long search to find a used 190 Montauk without 115hp and without bottom paint that is in my price range. The used ones I can find online are closer to $30000 and have the 115hp.

It's still hard to find good used 170 Montauks under $20000. I just dont feel that the 170 Montauk is a big enough step up from my classic 16'7".

Any other boats out there similar in size and style to the 190 Montauk?

Go look at Classic vintage Outrage 18s.

In addition to the classic 18' Outrages, you might want to take a look at the 1998-2001 18' Dauntless models. During those years, the rear bench seat is removeable which provides significant interior aft space.

Here are the specs, performance with the 150hp is fabulous:

Year 1998-2001
Length 18' 6"
Beam 8"
Draft 12"
Dry Weight 2300
Swamp Capacity 3800
Persons Capacity 8
Bridge Clearance 4'9"-7'3"
Freeboard 29"
Fuel Capacity 60
Max HP 150

You'll find these predominantly powered with Merc 125s and 135s, but packages with 150s of all manufactureres are out there.

The 1996-1999 19/20 Outrage is another boat you may want to look at.

The Edgewater 185 is another boat in this class you might find used with a 150 HP.

Here is a 1996 Outrage 21 with 225 Yamaha for $19,900. I would look at it if I was thinking about buying a Montauk 190.

Some of this depends on your fuel budget.

The stock 190/115hp (neighbor has one) doesn't scream but is decently powered, even with a full boat, and it's very good on gas (not a lot worse than my 170/90hp).

A 190/150hp combination sounds like probably a big jump in consumption.

The Craigslist boat has a Yamaha 225 2-cycle, an engine I knew and loved for years. Joke was it would pass anything but the gas dock. But it has to push that 21' boat at 50mph.

As always, performance needs need to be considered in light of bufget.

There will not be a big jump in fuel consumption going from a 115 to a 150, if there is any jump at all. The difference in the ICOMIA hourly average fuel consumption rate for a 2-stroke DFI or 4-stroke 115 versus a 150 is less than 1 GPH. That's 4 extra dollars per hour. But in that hour, the 150 will be doing more work for that 1 GPH or 4 bucks.

You can see that by comparing the performance reports for an Edgewater 188cc powered by both the Yamaha F115 and the Yamaha F150. The F150 powered boat provides a cruise of 4.82 MPG at 26 MPH while turning a leisurely 3500 RPM. The F115 powered boat provides a cruise of 4.71 MPG at 26 MPH but while having to turn 4000 RPM.

See

Based on these reports, not taking into account that the 115 is running in better ambient conditions, you'd have to run the boat above 35 MPH to see any fuel efficiency benefit out of the 115.

Peter, good data. My neighbor points out that getting his 190/115hp over 35 mph is impossible with any reasonable, even small, load.

It could be that the Montauk 190 isn't quite as fast as the Edgewater although they show 40 MPH with a 115. In any case, the Edgewater data is just to illustrate that there is little difference in fuel economy between a 115 and 150 (Verado not included).

Essentially, a 150 costs more than a 115 to put on the transom but it provides more capability with almost no reduction in fuel economy.

Also, given that the 150 turns 3500 RPM and the 115 turns 4000 RPM at the same cruise speed and that 500 RPM spread exists pretty much along the entire on-plane range, the 150 should be quieter than the 115 at virtually all identical speeds.

1/2 TANK one person and my 19 with bottom paint runs 39. BW site has performance and fuel consumption figures show it all look there. Power is OK but I would not want more than 4 people in boat.

Some 190 Montauks were sold with 135 HP Mercury Verado engines. You can possibly find a used one for sale.

Performance with the 135 Verado is excellent. I highly recommend the 190 Montauk with that engine.

If I am not mistaken, the early 190's only came with either a 115 or 135, no 150's. I'm thinking that the capacity plate is going to state max. HP at 135 which makes the 150 technically not legal.

The reason the Outrage 190's maximum hp rating increased from 135 to 150 was due to the newly introduced L-4 Verado 150. This new motor weighed the same as the 135hp.
