Re: Through-hull stanchion backing plate
Are these mounting plates the type used on the 13 sport (older models) with 2 posts attached to the plate to go thru the hull from the outside to the stanchion mounting pieces? If so, I have 6 or 8 of them I am not using. Have no idea what they are worth...

Re: 1978 15 Sport
I have found a replacement boat, and am anxious to sell my 15 Sport. The price is reduced to $5,300. I would consider selling the boat and trailer without the motor for $4,500.00.

Re: 1988 Sport 13 New Power
I had a new 1988 Sport 13, and chose a Yahama 30-HP two-stroke. I could actually pull an average-size adult on skis with two persons in the boat. The newer four-stroke-power-cycle engines are much better on gas consumption, but may not have quite as much oomph initially. The SPORT 13 takes a 20-inch...

Re: 1978 Classic 15-footer Repair
Years back, I had a 1984 15 Sport Center Console with a 70 Yamaha on it. When my GPS hit 42 mph, and the boat started "chine walking", I decided I really didn't need that much speed - especially since I was primarily fishing Lake Michigan. The wave swell spacing and height on a lot of days...

Re: 1978 Classic 15-footer Repair
My 40 HP Mercury has a 14 pitch x 10 or 10-3/8 - not sure which is the recommended. It's perfect for my boat - and I've had 15's with 70 Yamahas (WAY too zippy for me)..

Re: 1978 Classic 15-footer Repair
I have the exact same boat and it was in that identical condition when I bought it. I spent about 10-12 hours total refinishing the mahogany (removed it to do a thorough job). Looks to be a Mercury on the back. I picked up a 2004 Mercury 40 in pristine condition. Couldn't be happier: she pushes 35 m...

Re: Helm or Steering Wheel Has Vertical Play
Thanks for the responses. As I described, the wheel AND the shaft move up and down together. The spokes are all tight, and the attachment nut is tightened as much as I dare. I have checked the mounting of the assembly to the console and - since I noticed the looseness prior to disassembling the cons...

Helm or Steering Wheel Has Vertical Play
My 1978 SPORT 15 has what I believe is the original steering mechanism. It functions just fine, but the wheel rattles quite loudly from the slightest vibrations. The wheel has some vertical play. If I lift up on the wheel, it moves more than 1/4-inch. When I put my hands on the wheel, the rattling c...

Anchor Locker Water Control
On my 1978 15 Sport, The standard mahogany-finished forward locker accumulates rainwater to a level over half-full - sometimes even more. I don't leave the plug out because I would prefer a dry area up front. Since I am planning to replace the original hatch cover with a new one, I am considering ro...

I speculate that a replacement hatch cover might be fashioned from a piece of Starboard.

Re: 1978 SPORT 15 50-HP
Regarding the prop choice [for a SPORT 15 with 50-HP]: The dealer here recommended a 14 pitch (I think it's a 10-1/4 diameter) for my 2000 Mercury 40 hp on my 1978 Sport 15. Perhaps the 50 hp motors use the larger diameter. My gps readings with 2 adults (total of 400+ lbs) aboard with 1 6-gallon ful...

Re: 1978 sport 15 restoration project
As JimH has often noted: the 15 hull is (also in my opinion) the very best of the small and mid-size Whaler hull designs. I have a 1978 15 Sport with the optional wraparound rear seat/rail configuration, and I am convinced I will never part with it. I'm on a smallish Wisconsin lake, and it's perfect...
