Advice for Using Front-mounted Hitch on Tow Vehicle

Give me advice for using a front-mounted hitch on my towing vehicle specifically for a boat from 16 to 20-feet long.

I just had a front hitch installed on my Jeep for hitching to the trailer for my 170 MONTAUK.

Eight Questions About Propellers for a 170 MONTAUK

My boat is 2006 Montauk 170 with a Tohatsu 90-HP. I’ve been experimenting with various four-bladed propellers from 13 x 19 to 13 x 15. Ultimately I chose a 13.25 x 13. My assumptions are lower pitch: ⋅ reduces top speed ⋅ improves [acceleration from a standing start at full-throt...

Re: Appraisal: 2006 Montauk 170

Thanks for the reply, Phil. Your parts pricing is right on, except I added in dealer labor charges. Pofessional dealer installation and setup is not cheap but worth having done correctly.

Appraisal: 2006 Montauk 170

Is $44,000 a reasonable price for 2006 Montauk 170 in Houston, Texas? The boat has the fishing package option and all of the following installed by a dealer: ⋅ 2023 Tohatsu 90 under five-year warranty ⋅ Tohatsu digital controls ⋅ four-bladed steel propeller ⋅ ...

Re: 2002 170 Montauk Center Console Height

I’m 6’5” and own a 2006 Montauk 170 for the last 3 years… sure, the console might be a little more comfortable if higher, but used Montauk 170 is so hard to find don’t let a few inches scare you away.

I fish from spot to spot so no big deal. It’s a non concern.

Power pole install on a 2006 Montauk 170

I want to install 2 eight foot power poles on engine mounts off the stern of my 2006 Montauk 170. Transom weight would be 90 hp engine + jack plate + 2 power poles, too much weight on transom? Requesting opinions: Should the hydraulic pumps be installed in the center console, or shoehorn the 2 power...

Re: 170 MONTAUK 50-HP

Got my question answered just by diving deeper into older posts on this forum. Seems to be general agreement that the Montack 170 comes with a 90 hp for a good reason, anything less makes it less.

I’ll be looking for a new 90 hp.

170 MONTAUK 50-HP

I have a 2006 170 MONTAUK that needs a new engine. With covid 19 shutting down new engine manufacturing, new engine choices are just not that easy to find.

Question: would a new 50-HP engine be acceptable to power a 170 MONTAUK used just for fishing?

ProSport20PLUS battery charger

My 2006 Montauk was recently purchased with a 3 battery ProSport20PLUS charging system: 1 engine battery and 2 trolling motor batteries (24 v trolling motor). The ProSport20PLUS charger is designed to charge all 3 batteries simultaneously. I removed the 2 trolling motor batteries and plan to replace...

Re: Tohatsu 5-HP: Gasoline or Propane

It will be interesting to see if Tohatsu sells many of these [propane fuel 5-HP engines].

The Viking composite propane tank has a window showing fuel level and can be refilled at any propane vendor.

Re: 170 Montauk Fighting Chair Mounting

I think [the mounting of the fighting chair] maybe okay for now (as it is] without all the labor [jimh] described to screw down. I sandwiched Dri-Dek between the plywood and deck to cushion any bounce running in a chop. A big guy sitting in this heavy chair with leg leverage against the boat sides f...

Re: Species that can be caught in Texas

I hope to catch and release a big shark.

In my part of Texas big sharks and big tarpon can be caught surf casting from the beach or fishing off a jetty with heavy rods and reels if you know how. It's not necessary to go offshore.

Tohatsu 5-HP: Gasoline or Propane

I'm undecided on which TOHATSU 5-HP engine to buy for my 2006 Montauk: gasoline or propane fuel. The local Tohatsu dealer says the advantage of propane for an emergency engine application is there is no carburetor maintenance (because there is no carburetor); thus there is never any starting reliabi...

170 Montauk Fighting Chair Mounting

What is the to best way to install a Todd Supreme fighting chair in a 2016 Montauk 170 in front of the console? With the igloo cooler removed, there's a lot of room to rotate sitting in the seat, and the top of the anchor locker provides a nice flat surface to layout the tackle boxes. Because the de...
