Re: 1996 Outrage 19 Re-power

I believe [the boat under discussion, 1996 Outrage 19] is the same hull as my 1997 Outrage 20. In 2010 I re-powered the 1997 OUTRAGE 20 with an Evinrude E-TEC 175. Performance is very good. Only on very calm days do I wish it were faster. Even still, the 1997 OUTRAGE 20 with an Evinrude E-TEC 175 ge...

Re: 1998 Outrage 20 Engine Mounting Height

On my 1997 Outrage 20 with an E-TEC 175-HP engine, I am happy with [the engine] mounted as high as it will go. I tried the original mounting point of the old Mercury that I believe was mounted one-hole-up, but the engine was then immersed too deeply.

Re: Effect of Anti-fouling Bottom Paint on Boat Speed

I had old and flaking epoxy-based bottom paint on my 1997 Outrage 20. I sanded it off and surprising found no measurable difference in speed or economy. It sure looks better without the old paint though.

Re: Hydraulic Steering: Conserving Fluid During Changes

This is what I installed https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073RRTKM2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabc_0ukcGbAAG98ZN?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 Jimh, Basically disassembly, cleaning, and installing new orings. Some disassembly was tough and a few parts needed some heat to remove due to my unit being pretty darn old. I...

Re: Hydraulic Steering: Conserving Fluid During Changes

I recently rebuilt a SEASTAR helm. I wanted to save the hydraulic fluid, but it was in very poor condition and was probably 25-years-old. Instead of SEASTAR brand fluid I bought 09-27000 MIL-H-5606A HYDRAULIC FLUID from http://aircraftspruce.com. It has themilitary-specification that SEASTAR says ca...

Re: 1999 OUTRAGE 23: Identify Manufacturer of Swim Platform Latch

I know this is a bit late. I had some broken hinges on my 1997 outrage. I used the parts diagram and found the part number. A dealer wanted $33 per hinge. I noticed a brand molded into the hinge and found the original manufacturer. I was able to use that info to buy 4 new hinges on ebay for less tha...

Re: 1988 Outrage 22 WD Re-power Yamaha F300

Curious why you hate your 1400 hour E-ETEC? is it the engine itself having trouble, or was it a poor match to the hull? Its pretty odd that you are getting such a huge difference in MPG compared to jimh. I would expect the opposite result. Do you carry a large amount of weight? Is the hull dirty/rou...

Re: 1997 Outrage 20 with 175 HP ETEC; Seven Propellers

Phil T, fair question! The SST 17 I tried was borrowed from someone and while it performed very well, I decided to keep looking. The SST 17 wasn't available new, so anything I bought had the risk of being damaged (there were non is saw that were "like new" either) With a fairly light load,...

Re: Used 7-inch Chartplotter with NMEA-2000 $200 range

I unfortunately realized that my troubleshooting was inadequate. The new unit had the same problem when installed. It boiled down to corrosion on the fuse holder that was allowing a resting voltage through (showing the unit should have power) but when there was a current draw, the voltage dropped an...

1997 Outrage 20 with 175 HP ETEC; Seven Propellers

When I re-powered my [1997 OUTRAGE 20] boat in 2011 [with an E-TEC 175-HP engine], I went through quite a few propellers to obtain the optimum performance characteristics. I think some of this information may have been on the old forum, but I thought posting this performance data here may end up hel...

Re: Used 7-inch Chartplotter with NMEA-2000 $200 range

I ended up finding an HDS7 Gen 1 for $120 locally. Functionally good, a bit rough cosmetically, but for that price, I don't mind. The HDS7 I have seems pretty quick, but I don't think there is much saved to the memory, and I didn't load my [charts] yet, but I hope [the quickness] will be fine as [th...

Used 7-inch Chartplotter with NMEA-2000 $200 range

I want to buy a NMEA-2000 7-inch chart plotter, SONAR, and multifunction display for about $200 that is compatible with a Lowrance 83-kHz/200-kHz transducer that can show E-TEC engine data.

Offer suggestions. Thanks for the help.

Re: Buying new trailer: Single v. Tandem

Thanks for the help everyone. I put a down payment on the Continental trailer. I figure that a reputable brand like Continental has the experience to know how heavily a trailer needs to be built. I upgraded to torsion axles, 14-inch wheels, stainless steel hardware, LED lighting, and bow bunks. I wi...

Re: Buying new trailer: Single v. Tandem

[I am] still trying to decide on [the new trailer's] build type. Some other options that came up: --massively overbuilt, custom, 6,000-lbs-rated trailer, 1,000-lbs weight, out of Miami, or --conservatively built, Continental-brand, 4,400-lbs weight rating, 600-lbs weight, out of Deerfield Beach Both...

My weight was estimated as follows: Hull = 2200-lbs ETEC 175/prop/oil = 450-lbs 87 gallons of fuel = 600-lbs Batteries and electronics = 200-lbs Random stuff/anchor/bimini top = 300-lbs total = 3750-lbs current trailer weight 1200-lbs towing load = 4950-lbs tow rating = 5000-lbs So glad I have so mu...

Re: 1998 Outrage 20 Re-power

I was just going to chime in and say that I (used to be Commander Coo1) am still satisfied with the ETEC 175. Usually the seas are the limiting factor in how fast I can go, and I never have trouble getting on plane (even with 5 divers and tanks on board when I was over-propped!)

Thank you! Yes the seats are original. Not sure if they were standard or an option though.very handy when I am dragging a diver so I can turn sideways and have an easy view ahead and behind.
