Re: Destroyer Steering Wheel Available

RAAAY--My winter project was rescuing a Sport 13. Among the pile of parts that came with it was a 15-1/2-inch stainless steel wheel. I bought a smaller 13" wheel for my project, and now the 15" wheel is hanging in the garage. If you are interested in this, text me at 503-341-4634. It is in...

Anti-Ventilation Plate Foil Appendages

Is there a benefit to installing a hydrofoil extension onto the anti-ventilation plate of a Yamaha 40-HP engine on a 1977 SPORT 13? Tell me your experience with installing a hydrofoil extension onto the anti-ventilation plate of a Yamaha 40-HP engine on a 1977 SPORT 13. BACK STORY: have a 1977 SPORT...

Re: Rub Rail Installation: Seven Questions

Here is the link to the product I was referring to. I had never heard the term "Irwin clamps" either until recently when reading about installing the rub rail, and others used the term. I don't think I have ever actually seen an "Irwin" clamp. Maybe "ratcheting clamp" i...

Re: Yamaha 40-HP Gear Shift

Jim, I thought about what you said about the prop being able to spin faster than the drive shaft due to the ratchet. The sound was like a ratchet. I thought, maybe if it is under load (in gear)while the engine is running, there will be no clickety noise, just like there is no noise when I turn the p...

Yamaha 40-HP Gear Shift

I bought a 1988 Yamaha 40-HP two-stroke-power-cycle for use on a Boston Whaler boat I am restoring. The engine seller ran it [for] me in his driveway with the lower unit in a barrel of water, and it seemed to work fine. I'm am almost sure he shifted it into forward and reverse during the test. Later...

Re: Rub Rail Installation: Five Questions

Marlinmate, I finished installing the [rub] rail on my 1977 Whaler 13 rescue project on February 2, 2021. I bought [the replacement rub rail kit] from Specialty Marine. [The rub rail kit from Specialty Marine] came with the long rivets described above by ChristopherL. Helpful things I can pass along...

Sport 13 Yamaha 40-HP

I am in the midst of a project on a 1977 Sport 13. I have a 1988 Yamaha 40-HP two-stroke-power-cycle engine. The propeller is beat up, has no markings, and I can't tell its size. The owners manual for the motor lists 11-3/4 x 12 - G, but I think that number is an exemplar. Give me a recommendation f...

Paint Application: Sanding primer coat before applying topcoat

I have just finished applying the primer coat [of paint on a hull being restored]. The primer coat has a pebbly finish. Q: Should I sand [the primer coat surface to be] smoother before applying the topcoat? I read--maybe on the directions of the Wet Edge topcoat paint--that you should sand the prime...

Re: 13-footer Rough Hull

What is the purpose of moving the seats forward? Does it balance out the boat better? Run smoother? Appropriate when using a larger motor, like 40 hp?

Re: 1977 13 Sport Side Railing Screw Fastener Length

As to the screw length [shown in Figure 2], [the length] could be 1.5-inches (shown) or more, depending on how far the screws are turned into the backing plates.

[How far into the backing plates are the screws in Figure 2 threaded?]

Re: 1977 13 Sport Side Railing Screw Fastener Length

Tom has it. His picture is what I have, less the machine screws.

How long are the screws?

The screws appear to be 3/16-inch diameter, based on trying other screws from my stash that fit into the backing plates.

1977 13 Sport, Forward Storage Area Drain

The drain from the forward storage area appears that it should drain onto the deck. But, there is no tube connecting the two holes. If water gets into that forward locker, it will drain into the interior foam. And, I suppose, standing water on the deck would enter through the lower hole and also go ...

1977 13 Sport Side Railing Screw Fastener Length

I don't know what you call the things that the bolts that hold on the brackets of the side rails screw into. Whatever they are called, I need to know the length of the bolts that screw into them. It looks like [the length of something] is 3/16-inch.

Re: Thwart Seats: African v. Honduran Mahogany; 1-inch board

Well, Tom, I wish I had seen your reply before I bought the wood. I found a good local source. The 5/4 they had was a little thicker, 1 and 3/16". So was the 4/4, at 15/16". Rather than have to sand down 3/16 on the thicker piece, I thought I could get away with being 1/16" thin on th...

Thwart Seats: African v. Honduran Mahogany; 1-inch board

I have a winter project rehabilitating a 1977 Sport 13. This boat came with only one thwart seat, which may or may not be salvageable. I plan to do all new woodwork myself. I have seen the drawings, and they are not complicated. On-line I see mahogany wood for the 1-inch x 12-inch boards to construc...
