Re: 1962 13-footer Identifying Hull Materials

I thought over the great advice I have received from this forum and headed back to the garage this weekend with the intent of deciding whether to go forward with prepping my "mystery layer" for paint or going all in on removing it and trying to get back to the original hull. At the center ...

Re: 1962 13-footer Identifying Hull Materials

I have begun the long process of sanding down old coats of paint. I have another unexpected finding. While cleaning up the transom, I removed some loose and damaged fiberglass material. Under this fiberglass material was the original gel coat. While inspecting further, I found that throughout the to...

Re: 1962 13-footer Identifying Hull Materials

Thanks for the great information. Once I am able to flip the boat I will plan to chip and sand away the loose gel coat and further evaluate the hull with the information you provided. Now that you've helped me identify the layers I will research the appropriate repair and painting procedures and rep...

Re: 1962 Whaler 13-footer "Corner Bracket"

Thanks for quick response.

As I get into the restoration maybe I can do some investigative work into the damage that may have influenced someone to add this bracket. For the time being, I'll assume the brackets are there for a good reason and will not remove them.

1962 Whaler 13-footer "Corner Bracket"

I am restoring a 1962 13-footer. This hull has a component that I have not seen in any reference photos. At both stern corners of the hull there are brackets installed, and there is evidence of cracking. The brackets seem to be reinforcing the corners. The bolts holding the brackets in place were al...

1962 13-footer Identifying Hull Materials

[I need assistance in] distinguishing between materials like gel coat, fiberglass, and foam in areas of damage to my 1962 13-footer. The worst damage is at the front of the hull. (I understand this to be worrisome as it can mean that water has been forced into the damaged area. This certainly seems ...

Re: 1962 13-footer One Question and Two Observations

Thank you jimh for the quick response. I am impressed by the cleanup of my unfortunately sloppy post. I have read some of the great references you linked below which motivated me to participate in this forum. I think I will break out my questions into separate posts with pictures embedded and post i...

1962 13-footer One Question and Two Observations

I am a new owner of a 1962 13-footer that is in rough shape. Some curious findings so far: ⋅ there are two corner brackets bolted through the aft corners and cracking in both corners; were these added on after the fact or part of original design? ⋅ there is cracking of what seems...
