Re: Deck Repair: Six Questions

Jim, thank you for the recommendation on how to address the seam along the aft edge. That’s about the only reasonable idea I’ve heard, other than making a non skid mold. As to the void between wood and foam, I suspect they were bonded originally, but not when the previous repair was made.

Fig. 3. A new piece of plywood is fitted into the cut-out section. Notice how the top of the wood is flush with the surrounding foam.

Don--note the slight bow in the plywood on the right side. Your comment about ensuring the new wood is flat is relevant. I’ll need to make some more sawdust.

Re: Deck Repair

The rotted wood [that was the reinforcement for the trapezoidal section section cut out of the deck] was not bonded to the foam. It's difficult to see, but the foam will meet the underside of the gel coat skin around the sides and front portion. About 1 to 2-inch inches in from the sides and front, ...

Re: The MOELLER 24-gallon White On-deck Fuel Tank for Boston Whaler Boats

I am looking for a new fuel tank for my classic 15' Whaler and have narrowed my search down to the Moeller 15 gallon tank, which will seem to fit nicely under the rear thwart seat. The price difference between the the EPA-Compliant barrier version and the version for boats constructed before 2011 is...

Deck Repair: Six Questions

I learned about the “hammer tap” method for identifying soft spots on the deck of my 1983 Striper 15. I thought that before I go to the expense of a complete AWLGRIP [paint] job and redesign of the interior, I ought to make sure the deck was sound. Regrettably, I found an area about one- square-foot...

Re: 15-footer Bow Hatch Cover Fabrication

@DTMackie - when gluing the boards together with West System 105/207, did you add a filler? If so, which one? I don't want to see seams and I'm wondering if filler will enlarge the seams.

Re: AwlGrip Desert Tan

Since I live close by, I called the Finishmasters shop [mentioned above by user BINKSTER as a source of an AWLGRIP paint custom tinted to match his Boston Whaler boat, and whose color tinting formula was to be recorded locally there as "Desert Sand" by the paint shop and the formula was to...

Re: 15-footer Bow Hatch Cover Fabrication

Dtmackie, thanks for your reply. Impressive that the wood grain fails before the epoxy bond. Q: will three coats of epoxy applied to the entire piece prevent cupping? Q: are the backing board for strength rather than to prevent cupping? Also - Your chronicles (and results) are what inspired me to ta...

15-footer Bow Hatch Cover Fabrication

Please give me advice on how to properly fabricate a bow hatch cover that will not warp over time for a 1983 STRIPER 15. Given that I'll be fabricating this from several mahogany planks that I will plane and joint, I want to avoid the fate of my last one purchased online. Despite having cross boards...

1983 STRIPER 15 Console Restoration

The console on a 1983 STRIPER 15 seems to be fabricated from fiberglass laminates and gel coat formed in a mold and reinforced by wood to receive mounting hardware and to provide lateral stability. Q1: what is the best method for filling old 1/4-inch to 1/2-inch-diameter screw holes in the console i...
