Mooring a 1985 MONTAUK 17
How can a 1985 MONTAUK 17 without any cleats be moored to a dock from both stern quarters? As a relative newcomer to Boston Whalers, I was surprised to learn that cleats were frowned upon by the boat's designer. My 1985 Montauk 17 has stern cleats on each corner, which I confess are very useful. The...

Re: 1985 Montauk 17: Splash Well has Access Plate
All the comments you have provided have been very helpful, and I have had two phone conversations with Phil T that really clarified my path forward. I plan to undo some of the damage done to the boat before I got it. In Winter 2022-2023 I will: ⋅ raise the motor to two-holes down [--must m...

Re: 1985 Montauk 17: Splash Well has Access Plate
Thanks JimH for more good information (and Phil T for the original recommendation). The engine is mounted one-hole up. When I bought the boat it had a 2005 Yamaha 115 engine mounted all the way down, and performance was terrible. I am reasonably sure that the splash well was cut open and the foam wa...

This is all very helpful information, thanks to you all. I will follow JimH's recommendations.
Q1: is there more information on how to re-foam inside the area beneath the splash well?

1985 Montauk 17: Splash Well has Access Plate
I recently purchased a 1985 Montauk 17. The engine splash well has a six-inch round screw-in access plate. Under the access plate is a void in the Boston Whaler Unibond hull. When I bought the boat, the void under the access plate was damp. Yesterday I opened the plate and there was standing water i...

Re: Determining Unibond Hull Water Content
I recently purchased a 1985 Montauk 17 and re-powered with a Suzuki DF 90, same weight as a DF70. I bought it with a Yamaha 115 4-stroke on it, and the battery located in the stern, and the splash well drain plugs were well under water. After re-powering and moving the battery under the console, the...
