MONTAUK 17 Yamaha F70

I have been very pleased with the performance my MONTAUK 17 with a YAMAHA F70 engine, the lightest intermediate-size engine on the market, only weighing 253-lbs. With the factory-installed propeller [of unspecified material, number of blades, diameter, pitch, and model designation] and one person ab...

Re: 1981 Montauk 17 Battery Installation

Thanks for the info on the batteries. When the current ones wear out I'll probably replace them with the more modern ones that you mention. In the meantime, the console floor is getting supported to handle to load. In regard to the wiring - yes, the size of the cables has been adjusted to account fo...

Re: 1981 Montauk 17 Battery Installation

That is an ingenious solution. Elegantly simple and effective. I'll see if I can find a good woodworker to cut some pieces to the correct shape. I have lots of tools but not any good woodworking equipment. A nice big bandsaw would help. In the meantime, I am fashioning an adjustable 'jackscrew' with...

Re: 1981 Montauk 17 Battery Installation

Thanks to all. Time to start some re-engineering. Looks like I have a couple of options. Either the batteries will need to be mounted to the deck below, or I will need to create a support structure underneath the console. Good to know that the mounting configuration appears to be original. I appreci...

Re: 1981 Montauk 17 Battery Installation

Thanks for the info. I am thinking that I'll put a support under the floor of the console, rather than cutting out the floor. The sides of my console are sitting on what appears to be aluminum angle brackets, and there are stainless screws and washers through a strip of teak approximately 1-1/2-inch...

1981 Montauk 17 Battery Installation

I am planning to relocate the starting battery from the aft port side deck area to the forward inside of the center console during the repower of [my 1981 MONTAUK 17] boat. I am also thinking of putting a second deep cycle battery inside the console for the trolling motor. These modifications will r...

1981 Montauk 17 Center Console door catches

The door catches for the teak door on my 1981 Montauk 17 are chocolate-brown colored plastic units—intact, but getting cracked and hardened—and they no longer grip properly when closed. I am not sure if they are original, but I have reason to think they are. Give me advice to find replacement door c...

1981 Montauk 17 Restoration

I am currently restoring a 1981 Montauk 17 and in order to determine if the boat is totally original or has been modified, I would appreciate information on the following items/ Q1: what was the capacity of the factory-installed rectangular under-seat fuel tank? I have looked at aftermarket 12-gallo...

Re: 1981 MONTAUK 17 Wood Type, Finish Type

Thanks for the timely information. I have good history on the boat, and so I believe it to be completely original. The wood does appear to be teak, and all of the wood trim items look the same. I will experiment with the small footrest on the swim ladder first, to see how it turns out. I appreciate ...

1981 MONTAUK 17 Wood Type, Finish Type

I have recently acquired a 1981 Montauk 17 in excellent, but the wood needs refinishing. Q1: what species wood was used in 1981 on a MONTAUK 17? The wood looks like teak to me. Q2: should I finish the wood with oil or varnish? The wood is in good condition but is bleached out. ASIDE: I also have a 1...
