Re: Montauk 17: Handling Rain Water Accumulation in Cockpit
There are three options for management of rain accumulation in a Montauk 17, and I have done them all: 1. Remove the drain plug. In my 1990 Montauk 17 with a 1991 Mercury 90 HP outboard engine and two batteries mounted at the stern, doing this will result in the accumulation of no more than one inch...

Re: Method of Indicating Federal Hull Identification number
Out of curiosity, I emailed Boston Whaler Customer Service to inquire what tool was used to generate the HIN tag for their hulls. Re: Method of Indicating Federal Hull Identification number
Thanks for posting those HINs Alan. I thought that HIN application had progressed from metal tags (up through about 1995), transitioning to molded-in numbers in 1996, but you have disproven that. I just found a 1973 Sport 13 with a molded-in HIN on the starboard side. HIN 1973Sport13.jpg (Original p...

I agree with Jim that relying on the claim of an owner to determine the model year of a boat is a dubious proposition, especially if that boat is for sale, so I respectfully suggest that anyone who wants to post information about a particular style or location for their HIN tag in this discussion in...

I agree with your sentiments about the suboptimal quality of these photos, but it is a matter of reproducing a thumbnail image at even lower resolution. The best I can provide is a cropped image of the clearest shot I found of the "orange HIN". Hopefully there are some owners of 1996-1997 ...

Just before my previous post, I had spent some time looking at Boston Whaler boats for sale on Boat Trader. I suspect your opinion is shared by some other boat manufacturers. Of the 20 or so brands of fiberglass boats that I looked at on Boat Trader, only one (Ranger) uses metal tags for their HINs. I did see three brands of aluminum boats with metal tags, though.

I think the advice given by Jim and Phil is reasonable, but I do have some additional suggestions and comments. While it is certainly true that there is no "expiration date" for aluminum fuel tanks, problems do become more likely as the tank ages; the risk of fuel tank failure also depends...
