Pretty normal in an older 2-stroke to have black drips near prop. Usually a mixture of exhaust and unburned gas/oil mix. Just put a paper towel on your garage floor under prop.

I saw the new 2018 170 Montauk in person and came away very impressed with the attention to detail and the quality in the twin bow lockers, the new style [combined sidelights navigation lamp], the center console flush-mounted windshield, and the interior design. The boat looks like a winner to me.

Looking back at the old Boston Whaler brochures, even the original 1958 version, all the 13 Sports with steering had stern corner steering pulleys that were through bolted. Pretty important for safety.

You can still buy those new. They are chrome plated bronze, made by Perko and come in 3 sizes. Example: The 5 X 5 size is Perko part number PKO-060802ACHR.

I had not heard of the Desert Tan color name until the 1973 Boston Whaler came out. Recently at a classic car show, I noticed a car with an original factory paint color called Desert Tan. The car? A 1959 Edsel.

You need to ask yourself "Is it worth it?". That hull is in very poor condition. What is the interior like? Does the boat have sentimental value or family history? You may be better off [in terms of] time and money with another boat that has been taken care of and doesn't need as much work.

This makes me wonder. Could it be Boston Whaler may be thinking about offering Evinrude ETEC, Yamaha, Suzuki, Honda and other outboards as an option? That would certainly cause a huge increase in boat sales, requiring more capacity.

That video is VERY interesting. Makes me wonder how some of the smaller E-TEC's would do. Like the 60 ETEC on a 150 Montauk. Or a 90 E-TEC on a 170 Montauk. We've owned a 150 Montauk with a 60 4-stroke and ridden in a 170 Montauk with the 90 4-stroke, both pretty sluggish with average load.

The 90 HP 2-Stroke Yamaha is the perfect engine for a classic Montauk. Lightweight and great quality, power and speed. Try to find a good used one. There are lots out there - Yamaha made them from c.1980r through c.2008. My [second] choice would be a new F70 Yamaha.

I agree with Hoosier about the Chene anchor. They are lightweight, simple to use and no chain required or recommended. Retrievable straight up and can be used with a lot less anchor line. 2:1 instead of 7:1. We use the Chene #25 (for boats 12' to 25') in our classic Montauk.

Just saw an ad for a classic Boston Whaler Montauk that included a heated Reversible Pilot Seat. Had a button on one of the Z legs with the heat seat icon like some cars and trucks have. Sounds like a great idea for many boating areas.

We had a 1972 Ribside 21 Outrage with a 130 Yamaha 2-Stroke. GREAT boat. VERY stable. The 130 had plenty of power of speed. Tons of room, lightweight, and easy to trailer.

If the original white rubrail is intact, scrub it with Bar Keepers Friend and Scotch Brite pad. Many times comes out looking like new. Bar Keepers Friend is also great for fiberglass rust stain removal and general fiberglass polishing.

Try to restore the original gelcoat inside and outside if possible. Try a test spot using #7 polishing compound and a machine buffer. You might be surprised with the results. Usually it is easier, quicker and cheaper than remove and replace. The original gelcoat is worth saving.

I have a 70 Quart Igloo Marine cooler in my classic Montauk. Paid $49.95 last year.
The Yeti that would fit in the same spot is a Yeti 45 Quart. They sell for $349.00.

Went to the first local boat show of 2017 last week and noticed a lot of new center console boats have Yeti coolers as standard equipment, especially in the high end boats but on many others as well--makes sense to have a high-quality accessory on a high quality boat. I believe it is a 1972 model year. That is the only year the 13 had the combination of the blue interior, 15" transom cut out, sink-style stern splash well, 3 piece rub rail with black insert and smirked hull.

I don't think they had HIN tags back then like they do now. The stenciled numbers were it for a while.
From your picture, it looks like the number is 19747, which is a 1966 model year (17501 thru 21200).
Number 10747 is a 1964 model year (10301 thru 14700).
