Problems Reported by User in Attaching Files

In a boating forum which was discussing a boating topic, a user posted a very small image and then alerted readers about the small size of the image:

This is not true. There was no basis for you statement that you were unable to attach a larger image than a 320 x 240 pixel image of 25-kBytes that was imposed by the forum.

But first, please note that generally problems with using the forum are not discussed in the boating forums. You should post your problem with the forum software in the forum that is intended for those sorts of discussions. In the future, please use the forum INTRODUCTION TO THE FORUM SOFTWARE when you want to discuss problems with using the forum. You can find that forum listed in the index, or you can jump to it with this link:

If you looked into the forum INTRODUCTION TO THE FORUM SOFTWARE you would discover that the limit on hosting images files that are to be included in the forum discussion is much larger than the image you posted.

The image you posted has a pixel size of only 320 x 240 pixels. The limit on image size is 900 x 900 pixels. This means your image was very significantly smaller than the limit.

The image you posted has a file size of only 25-kbytes. The limit on image file size is 250 kbytes. This means that your file was very significantly smaller than the limit.

Also, when trying to use images for illustration, there is no need to include extraneous elements that might appear in the image that are not particularly relevant to the goal of the image as an illustration of some implementation or concept.

Here is the image you provided after being cropped to eliminate unnecessary elements and then expanded to a larger size:

Fig. 2. The image from Figure 1 enlarged.

Unfortunately, because your original file was so limited in resolution, the image remains very rough and difficult to read.

Also, if you post an image that includes CALLOUTS to various components using numbers, please include a LEGEND that explains the meaning of each numbered item. Without that information the CALLOUTS are useless and just clutter the illustration.

Actually Jim it was true. "I" (emphasis on I) was not able to attach my image. I never said others couldn't attach files but I was not able to. Maybe I'm doing it incorrectly or I'm just too stupid to figure it out. Happy Holidays.

I am glad to parse out what you said, but I will have to use your exact words. If you had said "I was not able to attach my image," then that is entirely a true statement. But you did not say that. Your post said:

I wasn't able to attach a larger picture due to a size limit.
The significant difference is you cited "a size limit" (which is to be inferred as something done by the forum software) as the reason you could not post "a larger image."

First, any image that is larger than the 320 x 240 pixel image you posted will qualify as "a larger image." And the size limit is NOT 320 x 240 pixels, it is very much larger, 900 x 900 pixels. So there were innumerable image files you could have posted that were larger than the one you did post that would not have encountered a size limit.

The inference from your statement is that in order to be able to post an image, it must be 320 x 240 pixels because the forum is preventing you from posting a larger image. That is not true. The forum is not preventing you from posting an image larger than 320 x 240 pixels.

The photograph you took appears to show the screen of a computer monitor. If you just posted a proper URL to whatever resource was being displayed on your computer monitor you would be far better off than posting a very small, very low resolution file of that photograph of a monitor screen showing a Boston Whaler document you likely found on the internet.

Modern "smartphone" cameras are now able to take images whose pixel size and file size are enormous. Image files can be many megabytes in size and have pixel dimensions that exceed the ability of even the largest computer monitors to display in their entirety. For this reason, any image file created by a high-resolution digital camera will be far too large to be useful at its original size as an illustration to be included in-line in HTML presentations using a forum-type platform.
