Adding Image to Post

Postby jimh » Sat Aug 19, 2017 10:37 am

There are two methods to add an image to a post:

--point to the URL of the image that is available, or

--upload the image as an attachment to the post.

Images that have already been uploaded in one post can be re-used in other posts by pointing to the URL of the image in the original post where it was uploaded. Images are included by use of the IMG tag. Wrap the URL for the image with the [ I M G ] and the [ / I M G] tags. For example, if an image is hosted at the URL http://foo.bar/images/image.jpeg, then to include the image as an in-line image in a post you would wrap the URL with the IMG tags: [ I M G ] http://foo.bar/images/image.jpeg [ / I M G]. Here I added spaces to prevent the tags from working.

To upload an image as an attachment to a post, use the tab with the Menu Icon in the post composition window at the bottom of the window, then select the ATTACHMENTS sub-menu, then upload the image from your terminal to the forum host.

LIMITATIONS ON IMAGE FILES

In order to upload an image, the file format is limited to certain types, the total file size is limited, and the width of the image is limited.

LIMIT ON FILE FORMAT: the supported file types are .gif, .jpg or .jpeg, and .png. The website does not support uploading of image files in the .tif or .tiff format.

LIMIT ON FILE SIZE: The total file size is limited to 256-kB. This is an enormously generous file limit, and there is hardly any image that needs to be more than about 50-kB. That you own a camera that can take images files of hundreds of megabytes does not mean you get to post them here. Such massive images are not appropriate for illustration purposes in a text-based forum.

LIMIT ON IMAGE DIMENSIONS: The image width cannot exceed 900-pixels in order to not disrupt the layout of the forum.

ADDING IMAGE IN-LINE AND CREATING FIGURE NUMBER AND CAPTIONS
Once the image has been attached to the posting, the image will automatically be shown at the end of the post as an attachment.

Generally an in-line image is more effective if it is included with and near the appropriate text in the post. The location of the image can be controlled by selecting the image to be an INLINE image. Then the code for the image can be moved to the appropriate position in the post as the author desires. It is STRONGLY urged that images be made in-line, that they be numbered in sequence as they will appear with the first being Fig. 1, the next Fig. 2. and so on, and that there be explanatory captions that describe the image in detail.

IMAGE ORIENTATION: In-line images will show in their original orientation. This is a function of HTML in-line images. Images for inclusion in-line in HTML must be properly oriented. Please to not shoot images with your camera held vertically for portrait format.

Advice on how to use the forum software is given the Introduction forum and is given in the forum FAQ (not the boating) FAQ.

I moved your inquiry to this thread. See answer above.

Test to see if I'm doing this correctly.

I have a Picturetrail hosting pics.

The problem is the first right bracket is wrong. And at the end the left bracket is wrong --jimh

See above where the allowed file formats are explained. The file format you tried to upload cannot be hosted by the website. Further, there is no point in the website hosting a file in that format because there are no web browsers that support that format, so no one could see the image.

The HEIC photo file format is unique to only recent Apple iPhone cameras. It is not supported on this forum.

All the .heic pictures I post on facebunk display properly. It seems to be many of the web forums have the limitation, not the browser.

iPhone pics?

You can set the the format in settings to save as .jpg

I use the free app "Image Size" to resize pics for forums when uploading from my phone.

The facebook app is not using a web browser.

Thanks for the information on the iOS image resizing applet.

The moderator does not need to approve pictures as they are uploaded.

Please read the earlier posts in this thread for more advice.

The reason you are getting that message is explained in the message. The file extension ".msg" is not a supported file image format. Image files can only be uploaded if they are in the common image formats. The common image formats that are supported are explained in the first post in this thread.

Many modern smartphone cameras provide extremely high-resolution images. There is no purpose in using gigantic files as illustrations. Use an image manipulation program to reduce the file size and the pixel size to comply with the generous limits the forum imposes, 900 x 900 pixels and 250-kBytes, as already explained in this thread in the first post.
