INSTANCE Settings for FLUID TANKS in E-TEC G2 Rigging
Posted: Sat Apr 13, 2019 3:39 pm
In the Evinrude E-TEC G2 engine rigging, there is a convention or standard used for the INSTANCE parameter associated with fluid tank level senders. A list of INSTANCE value and the reserved function with E-TEC G2 rigging and instrumentation follows. (I use A-B-C-D to identify the analog inputs in order to avoid confusion with multiple numerical identifiers; the actual labels on the wiring are likely to be different):
INSTANCE ---> Reserved function
0 = E-TEC G2 engine under-cowling OIL reservoir tank level, single engine or port engine in multi engine
1 = E-TEC G2 under-cowling OIL reservoir tank level, starboard engine in twin rigging, center in triple rigging, port-center in four-engine rigging
2 = E-TEC G2 under-cowling OIL reservoir tank level, starboard engine in triple rigging, starboard-center in four-engine rigging
3 = E-TEC G2 under-cowling OIL reservoir tank level, starboard engine in four-engine rigging
4 = reserved for the first input (A) of the four analog inputs (A-B-C-D) on the ICON II EST control head
5 = reserved for the second input (B) of the four analog inputs (A-B-C-D) on the ICON II EST control head
6 = reserved for the third input (C) of the four analog inputs (A-B-C-D) on the ICON II EST control head
7 = reserved for the fourth input (D) of the four analog inputs (A-B-C-D) on the ICON II EST control head
8 = reserved for the single analog input of the ICON 4.3 CTS display or the first input (A) of the three (A-B-C) inputs of the ICON 7 CTS display
9 = reserved for the second input (B) of the three (A-B-C) analog inputs of the ICON 7 CTS display
10 = reserved for the third input (C) of the three (A-B-C) analog inputs of the ICON 7 CTS display
11 thru 15 = reserved for NMEA-2000 tank level convertor devices separate from any engine or display analog inputs.
In the case of INSTANCE 0 to 3, the E-TEC engine sends these according to how the engine EMM INSTANCE has been programmed. The E-TEC engine will be sending the under-cowling oil tank reservoir level for the engine, using INSTANCE 0,1,2, or 3 as appropriate to the total number of engines and the position of the engine in multi-engine rigs.
In general, none of the INSTANCE settings of the analog input converters on the Evinrude display or control devices can be changed.
TANK TYPE ---> Preset configuration
The TANK TYPE is a separate parameter from INSTANCE. In the Evinrude system the following TANK TYPES are pre-set:
INSTANCE 0,1,2,and 3 are set to be TANK TYPE = OIL in the EMM of the E-TEC G2; these cannot be changed.
INSTANCES 4,5 are preset to be TANK TYPE = FUEL. These can be modified to be OIL. See below.
INSTANCES 6,7 are preset to TANK TYPE = OIL, These can be modified to be FUEL. See below.
INSTANCE 8,9,10 are preset to be TANK TYPE = OIL. These can be modified to be FRESH WATER, GRAY WATER, or BLACK WATER.
EVINRUDE CONTROLS or DISPLAYS and ANALOG INPUTS
The Evinrude ICON II PREMIUM EST controls typically provide four analog inputs (A-B-C-D) that are intended for connection to resistive fluid tank level senders. These inputs are pre-configured as INSTANCE 4-5-6-7. The TANK TYPE parameter is pre-set to FUEL as TANK 1 and TANK 2 corresponding to INSTANCE 4-5 and to OIL 1 and OIL 2 corresponding to INSTANCE 6-7. NOTE: IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO ALTER THE INSTANCE SETTINGS FOR THESE INPUTS. The TYPE setting can be changed. See below.
The Evinrude ICON II (BASIC) EST controls do not provide analog inputs for connection to resistive fluid tank level senders.
The Evinrude ICON 4.3 Color Touch Screen (CTS) Display has one analog input intended for connection to a resistive fluid tank level sender. This input is INSTANCE = 8 and cannot be changed. The TYPE can be configured (using the display itself) to be set to TYPE = OIL, FRESH WATER, GRAY WATER, or BLACK WATER.
The ICON 7.0 Color Touch Screen (CTS) display has three analog inputs that can be used with resistive senders from fluid tanks. These inputs are pre-configured to be TYPE = OIL (and designated OIL 1, OIL 2, OIL 3 corresponding to INSTANCE 8,9,10 ). The TYPE can be configured (using the display itself) to be set to TYPE = OIL, FRESH WATER, GRAY WATER, or BLACK WATER. See below.
The ICON 3.5 C color display has no analog inputs.
The NAUTILUS display (sometime referred to as the Evinrude ICON II 3.5 Round display) has no analog inputs
Note: if external fluid tank level sensors with NMEA-2000 output are used to monitor tank levels, those NMEA-2000 devices will have to be pre-configured to have the proper INSTANCE and tank TYPE in order to be useful with displays such as the Evinrude ICON CTS and CS display which are preset to look only for certain INSTANCE settings. In some situations EV-Diagnostics Version 6 can perform those configurations. The ICON CTS or CS gauges cannot configure the INSTANCE settings of NMEA-2000 senders (as far as I can tell), but they can configure the TYPE setting.
EVINRUDE CONTROLS and DISPLAYS: CONFIGURATION ABILITY
The four analog inputs for the ICON II PREMIUM EST controls can be configured by EV-Diagnostic Version 6, by an ICON 7.0 CTS display, or by an ICON 4.3 CTS display to change the TANK TYPE to be either FUEL or OIL.
The analog inputs on the ICON 7.0 CTS and the ICON 4.3 CTS can be configured by the displays themselves to set the TANK TYPE for each analog input. The TANK TYPE can be set to OIL, FRESH WATER, GRAY WATER, or BLACK WATER.
