170 MONTAUK: How to Store Fly Fishing Rods

Postby fishingproblems » Tue Jul 29, 2025 1:47 pm

I am seeking method to add [horizontal storage] for fly rods to the cockpit of a 170 MONTAUK.

I would like the storage to be in the inwale of the cockpit below the gunwale.

I am a fishing guide so I usually have anywhere four to six [fly fishing] rods on the boat.

Give me any idea you might have for how to accomplish this.

ASIDE ON A FRIEND
I friend is planning to make an aluminum aft [raised] casting deck for me, with added storage compartments.

Almost anything mounted below the gunwale will intrude on quick and easy movement fore and aft for yourself and your clients. If the rods will have reels attached they will intrude even more. Perhaps some very simple horizontal rod holders to attached to the Montauk's railings with heavy duty Velcro would solve the storage problem. Velcro should also allow for quick access to the rods.

Alternatively, six stainless steel vertical rod holders arrayed across the transom above the engine would not interfere with people movement. Fly fishing over the transom would not be possible but that is possibly not the best place from which to cast. Fabricating a stainless steel tube and mounting six clamp-on stainless steel rod holders to that should not be prohibitively expensive.

I am going to try horizontal rod holders from SEASUCKER.

Those horizontal rod holders from SEASUCKER like a good compromise between space and utility. Our previously owned Dauntless 16 had hinged rod holders in the gunwales for horizontal rod storage. When angling with two persons they were useful, otherwise they hindered fore-and-aft movement.
