1983 Teamsters Union Threatens Strike

Postby mdplunkett » Tue Jun 28, 2016 3:42 pm

Hi,

In a conversation with Joe Lawler (former President of BW), he mentioned that the Teamsters Union threatened to strike against BW if their contract demands weren't met. There was a ten-day strike before the side agreed on the terms of the new contract.

If anyone was in the Teamsters Union in 1983 or has any memories of that event, I'd like to speak with you about your memories. I've heard from the management side, but it would be great to include the point of view of the typical worker.

As many of you know, I'm writing a book on the history of the Whaler and this strike is a key moment (at least from Lawler's perspective) during his tenure. Unfortunately, I'm having trouble locating first-hand accounts to corroborate his memories.

Thanks for the help.
