What are the dimension of a 40-gallon fuel tank as used in a 1977 Outrage 21?

BACKSTORY: I want to replace the manual fuel gauge with an electronic dashboard gauge. I do not know the dimensions [of the fuel tank] and thus I cannot order the correct unit.

What is "the correct unit" that you cannot order until you know the dimensions of the fuel tank that is in the boat you own?

What "dimension" of the fuel tank do you think must be known before you can order "the correct unit"?
