Dauntless 13 vs Edgewater 140

Postby cb_nbpt » Mon Jul 20, 2020 3:14 pm

Give me advice comparing a 1996 Dauntless 13 with a 40-HP two-stroke-power-cycle engine and a 1998 Edgewater 140 with a 50-HP four-stroke-power-cycle engine.

From what I can tell, the Edgewater 140 only has capacity for four persons whereas the Dauntless 13 has capacity for five persons.

I'm assuming this is because the Edgewater's hull is heavier.

To find specifications for the [1998–use for digits for years] Edgewater 140 is hard. I'm assuming the specifications for the Edgewater 140 are close to the Edgewater 145 at 14-feet length, 6-feet 4-inch beam, 1,000-lbs hull weight, 1,000-capacity capacity, and four persons.

I'm asking about capacity because I'd like to cruise local rivers with four adults and two young kids, a total weight of 750 to 800-lbs.

Q1: would either of these boat allow that?

Go larger.

You will be very crowded.

Think 16'7/17' models.

Thanks Phil. 99% of the time it'll just be my wife and two young kids. We're all pretty small.

Do you have any thoughts on comparing those two boats?

I personally would go for the Edgewater and the 4 stroke engine. I personally would limit my cruising with 6 people in a 14 boat. I would limit that in my 18 outrage.
On my 24th Whaler. Currently in the stable: 86 18' Outrage, 81 13' Sport(original owner), 87 11' Sport, 69 Squall(for sale cheap).

Thanks Biggie. Your input is appreciated.
The Edgewater 14 boat does seem to have the edge in terms of fit, finish, ability, and (in this case) engine.

I've owned two Edgewater 140cc boats. The first one was a 1998 model I bought new in 2000. I sold it about ten years later and five years after that, I simply had to buy another. I wish I had never sold the first one since I took better care of it than whoever maintained the used one I bought. C'est la vie.

For me, the Edgewater 140cc is perfect because I still think it is the best built and most seaworthy boat you can tow with a small car. I'm biased I suppose, but the quality is at least equal to—if not better than—Boston Whaler. Edgewater was started by Bob Dougherty after he left Boston Whaler, and his goal was to one up Boston Whaler.

As far as I know, the 140cc is the only Edgewater built with RAMCAP. The RAMCAP process seems to me stronger and lighter than the normal foam injection process. You can read about RAMCAP on the web by searching for "Everglades Boats" which was another company started by Bob Dougherty. Not sure what the connection is between the Edgewater and Everglades companies.

A small car can still tow a 140cc because the hull only weighs 550 lbs. With engine, battery, fuel, AND trailer it was still under 1100-lbs according to my local county’s scale.

Before you question my use of the word "seaworthy" in regard to a 14-foot-boat, you should know that I took mine from Miami to Bimini and back. The return trip across the Gulf Stream was no problem even thought I was in (non-cresting) waves so big I couldn't see the horizon from the bottom of the trough while standing up; I'm 6-feet 2-inches tall.

The EDGEWATER 140cc is perfect for one person, cozy for two as long as you're friendly, but I wouldn't go into the ocean with more than two. If you're talking about calm water, I think six people is reasonable for puttering around but I'm not sure it would get up on a plane.

ASIDE: the Edgewater 145cc is a totally different design. It is much heavier and probably not as strong because it's not built using RAMCAP.

Bob Dougherty didn’t “leave” Boston Whaler, he was forced out when ownership and management changed.
