Self-bailing

Postby dunstr » Sun Aug 16, 2020 5:41 pm

Does the OUTRAGE 17 self bail?

By this I mean no bilge pump is required.

Do any MONTAUK models self bail?

We have a 2012. When the plug is removed a decent amount of water comes in prior to leveling out.

My neighbor has a 2001 SPORT 13. It is completely self bailing in the fact that upon pulling plug no water comes in and all rain water exits the boat upon hitting the deck.

Does an OUTRAGE 17 require a bilge pump?

Our situation is unique in that we leave boat for extended periods of time. I am looking for models that DO NOT require bildge pump. Please help.

The 1990-1995 Outrage 17I is self bailing with one major condition.

With the stern sump plug removed significant volumes of water will enter to reach equilibrium with the outside water level. Once reached, no additional water will enter.

I ran my 1991 Outrage 17I with the sump drain plug inserted and a bilge pump. I plan to do this with my 1992 under restoration.

I would not anchor this model with the drain unplugged.

Truly self bailing models not requiring a bilge pump include:

13 Sport
15 Sport
16'7 models
17' models
130 SuperSport
150 SuperSport
150 Montauk
170 Montauk
1992 Outrage 17
2019 E-TEC 90

I believe the term "self bailing" is generally accepted to mean a boat with scuppers designed to shed water entering the boat from above the waterline. If this definition is accepted almost all, if not all, Boston Whaler boats are self bailing.

Many boats with scuppers are left for long periods on moorings and in slips. There are some methods of dealing with water entering the boat from rain or chop when unattended. Two methods used are to install a weatherproof cover or install a solar panel to provide sufficient electrical power to maintain the battery at full charge when the bilge pump operates. I suspect installation of a weatherproof cover is the method most often employed as that also helps maintain the boats appearance by protecting it from the sun's UV rays and bird droppings. Properly designed and constructed covers are also long lasting and not subject to electrical malfunctions.

My 19 Bananas were self bailing. I did not keep a plug in except for the bow locker. My 1986 18' Outrage is not. My 1981 13' sport is not due to the stern weight. 16 & 17 model classics are not unless fitted with a very light engine. My Montauk would fill up to about the rps seat until the flow stopped.
On my 24th Whaler. Currently in the stable: 86 18' Outrage, 81 13' Sport(original owner), 87 11' Sport, 69 Squall(for sale cheap).

My 2004 Nantucket 190 (w/ Mercury 135 Optimax) has a self bailing cockpit. The cockpit continues to self bail even when the bilge area is completely full of water.
