1973 19' Outrage

Postby travisrhale » Thu Mar 04, 2021 9:03 am

[I am] new to [Boston Whaler boats] and to boats in general. I may buy a 1973 19' Outrage in good condition and powered with a 2008 Honda BF150 with 260 hours. [The seller's asking price] seems like a good deal.

[I want to solicit advice on making this purchase from] experts.

Price depends on condition, features, original elements and location.

The value of dock lines, fenders, a burgee staff, and an ensign are generally not significant contributors to the overall value of the boat. They are nice to have if in good condition, but their presence or absence should not really have great influence on the purchase price.

The 1973 boat you are considering is now 48-years-old. The most important element in deciding to buy this boat is the actual condition of the boat hull.

Since you are new to boats in general, your determination that the present condition of the hull is "good" may be in error.

Where and how the boat has been used for the last 48-years is also an important influence.

It seems like most of the value is in the motor but the boat looks very clean for the year. As far as soft spots and hull condition the current owner says it's in good condition given it's 48 years old and hasn't noticed any soft spots. He's owned it for 6 years and it has been professionally maintained.

I infer you have not seen the boat yourself. Neither have any readers. The seller's assessment of "good condition" is really quite vague and perhaps unusually modest. Sellers often describe the condition of the boat they have for-sale with more praise.

The condition of a used boat being offered for sale should be assessed by seeing the boat in person before agreeing to purchase, or at least, an agreement to purchase should be made contingent on inspection by the buyer or his agent before the sale is final.

Also, asking $12,500 seems rather modest these days for a 19-foot boat with 150-HP four-stroke-power-cycle engine in good running condition on a roadworthy trailer. Again, the hull condition is really the most important element.

I just sold a boat with [a Honda150 engine]. [The Honda 150 engine] was corroded badly, even though I was diligent about flushing the [cooling] system. I have heard of corrosion with Honda engines.

I recommend to pull the thermostats and look into the interior of the cooling system for corrosion. I suspect that [cooling system corrosion] is why the price is so reasonable.
