Bought a New Grady White

Postby macfam » Sun May 09, 2021 8:42 am

Due to costly upkeep I sold my Albin 28. I wanted a 23 to 25-foot dual console boat with hardtop. After spending a week in Florida, where my friend had a new 240 VANTAGE, I began to search for a new Boston Whaler 240 VANTAGE. A Boston Whaler dealer said a new 240 VANTAGE would not be available until September 2021.

I also searched for an Edgewater or Pursuit dual console, and got the same story.

While in Florida I rented a Grady-White 235 with a Yamaha 300-HP and a soft Bimini top for a day--I loved the Grady-White 235. The local Grady-White dealer happened to the the world's largest Grady-White dealer. He had a FREEDOM 235 with hardtop and Yamaha in-production. This Grady-White FREEDOM 235 was equipped exactly as we wanted. My wife and I made the deal after three hours at the Grady-White dealer. I am looking forward to delivery of the 2021 Grady-White FREEDOM 235 with hardtop and Yamaha engine.

My brother has a 2000 Grady-White TOURNAMENT dual console, with a 2000 Yamaha HPDI engine. At age 21-years-old that Grady-White TOURNAMENT dual console looks and runs like new. After spending 21 years on Cape Cod saltwater the 2000 Grady-White TOURNAMENT hull is solid as a rock. The Yamaha HPDI has been trouble free.

You will doubtless get a lot of pleasure from your new Grady. I hope you don't experience the delays in delivery caused by a severe shortage of outboard engines. It would be interesting to hear about your boat's build progress.

Butch—you are right: delays could ruin my boating this year. The VP of Sales was up front.

On the plus side, Grady White is Yamaha’s biggest customer. Let’s hope they know who butters their bread. This dealer has been here since 1959, like Boston Whaler.

I'd love a Grady White Freedom 275 or 285.

Q: are people steered toward Grady White boats from Boston Whaler boat for the Yamaha engine?

Well, no production delay, as my new Grady-White FREEDOM 235 boat is at the dealership in shrink wrap with my name written on both sides. Yay!

There is plenty preparation work as well as getting everyone into the water due to huge customer demand here in New England. I’ll be patient.

Let's see some pics of delivery day!

We looked at new Grady White dual consoles a couple of years back, despite them being way out of our price range. They appear to be very well made to my untrained eyes.

OK, I’ll take some pics on delivery day. I’m guessing second week of June.

Roundle1979: Our close friends have a brand new 240 Vantage 300 Mercury in FL. We loved it! I was looking to simplify life by downsizing from our Albin 28. I was not persuaded away from Boston Whaler and Mercury’s for Yamaha.
It was market forces. There were NO new 240 Vantage available. But I could put a deposit on the Grady while in production, and it was only a month or so away.
My brother’s Grady and Yammy combo has always impressed me.
I would put Grady and Yamaha vs.Boston Whaler and Mercury on equal footing. Prices and performance are nearly identical.

Right now I would take a Grady White, Boston Whaler, Edgewater, or Pursuit Duel Console and count them pretty much equal.
Of the four, Grady White has had an advantage of producing duel consoles for over 20 years!!! The other 3 manufactures are newcomers. (And copy-cats!!!) --I laugh aloud--

We were trying to find a nice used 210/220/230 Dauntless and happened across a used Everglades 230DC dual console. It turned out to be a fantastic layout for family/fishing/exploring/sunbathing/etc. I think you are going to LOVE your new Grady.

I neglected to mention Everglades!!!
Fantastic boat you have there.
Here on a Cape Cod, Whalers, Edgewater’s, Grady’s and Pursuits are EVERYWHERE. But we don’t see many Everglades....yet.

The Everglades 230DC is a battlewagon. It feels super solid and is probably quite heavy for it's size.

Too bad they don't make it anymore, just the 340DC, but that's $450k+, so just a bit out of our price range. Only $350k higher than we'd ever spend on a boat.

Our frequent cruising companion Kevin sold his Boston Whaler 180 DAUNTLESS and moved up to a cuddy cabin boat. But he chose a Pursuit 235 Offshore with a Yamaha 300-HP four-stroke-power-cycle engine. Since he was typically the only non-Boston Whaler boat in our cruising fleet, he appropriately gave the Pursuit 235 Offshore the name OUTLIER.

Since Pursuit boats are made by the company founded by Leon Slikkers and originally begun in western Michigan, we felt a particular kinship to welcoming a Pursuit into our Great Lakes Boston Whaler Cruising Club fleet. A Grady-White might not have received such a friendly embrace, although the Grady-White boats are certainly fine boats.
