Identify RAGE

Postby dtbradio » Wed Jun 23, 2021 2:15 pm

I just acquired what was advertised as a 1995 Boston Whaler Rage [14] with a Yamaha jet-drive system. The hull identification number on the title does NOT match what the boat actually appears to be.

The title says the [HIN] is BMCGA588F292. BMC comes up as a BMC Marine model. This is obviously wrong, as they only make aluminum boats, and this is definitely fiberglass in the traditional Whaler style).

The original [HIN] tag on the boats transom is painted over and illegible, as is the square capacity plate on the interior.

The over-all appearance definitely screams Boston Whaler.

I've spent days trying to figure out exactly what I actually DO have, and the best I can come up with is that its likely a 1992 to 1993 RAGE.

The engine is actually a Yamaha 700 and apparently upgraded from the original 650 the RAGE was supposed to have.

I've attached a few photos to help with identification.

My guess: [the “BMC”] in the title is a typographical error in the [federally required hull identification number manufacturer identification code].

[It should read] “BWC” for Boston Whaler.

You clearly have a Boston Whaler RAGE which in the Yamaha-powered configuration made in 1992 and 1993.

The [federal hull identification number you give above] is for a 1992-model-year boat.

I was able to remove enough paint from the ID tags to confirm that it is indeed a [RAGE 14], but the HIN tag is incomplete:

For advice on decoding the partial federal hull identification number (HIN) see the FAQ.

The FAQ is in the REFERENCE Section.

The REFERENCE Section is in the WHALER Section.

The URL is thus

The molded-in stencil number is unique to Boston Whaler, so you can assume the manufacturer identity code (MIC) missing from the HIN was BWC.

The boat is clearly NOT a 1995 model year or 1995 production year, so the seller defrauded you.

The blue interior color seems very odd. Perhaps a prior owner stupidly painted over the original gel coat finish. You can see the original gel coat color in the photo showing the stencil number: white.

The rigging looks slipshod: holding a cable to a drain hose with a nylon tie-wrap is awful work.

[Boston Whaler provided] the proper [HIN]. [The boat title] indeed has a typo.

[Boston Whaler] confirm that [the RAGE under discussion] is a 1992 model. The wiring info they sent me is for an OMC jet drive instead of the Yamaha.

I agree, this "refurbish" job is utter crap. I pointed that out to the seller when I looked over the boat (and did it as nicely as I could), and the reason was basically they didn't want to take the time to do it any better.

There is no vent fan in the [fuel tank and] battery area; the vent pipes are all but shot; the wiring is horrible; the masted running light socket had its wires cut completely off, but the light at least works; all but one of the dash switches are disconnected—including the key switch; the trim tabs are bent from the boat being loaded on an improperly-configured trailer—not sure yet what I'm going to do about that and I may remove the trim tabs temporarily until I get that figured out);the motor looks like it may not have been properly flushed at some point as there is some white build-up in the cooling channels; and the list goes on.

Its one heck of a wreck that I'm going to try to polish.

Thanks again for the replies and information.
