Hurricane Ida

Postby Jefecinco » Sun Aug 29, 2021 10:23 am

In Gulf Shores, Alabama, we are just getting the first of Hurricane IDA’s outer rain bands with increased wind speed. This is not a good boating day. For the past two days we have seen a steady parade of boats and large yachts heading eastward looking for safe moorings. There is an uncompleted marina across the waterway. Yesterday a large power catamaran attempted to moor there but it's beam was too wide. Currently we have two large sports fisherman there.

Poor New Orleans is going to suffer a repeat of Hurricane Katrina. Hopefully over the sixteen years since Katrina they have improved their floodgates and ensured the reliability of the very large diesel driven dewatering pumps.

We spent yesterday preparing and do not anticipate any damage.

Also a rain event in Gulf Shores, but we had tornado warnings all day Sunday and into the night. Other than losing power New Orleans seems to have fared far better than they did during Katrina. At least the floodgates held up and most of the pumps performed well as no flooding inside the protected zone was reported.

We had a lot of flooding on Fort Morgan and the West Beach area. I have not heard anything more about it which is good news in itself.

It looks like the west end of Dauphin Island got a dose of storm surge, not the worst to be sure, but enough to put Bienville Blvd. and a few vehicles under water. A few of the homes on the west end are struggling to hang on (not just from this storm) but that's an ongoing problem. Jemison's Bait looked like it had a foot or two of water on the ground level but they've seen that - and worse - before. The road up the west side of the ICW/Mobile Bay from Dauphin to Mon Louis Island looked like it was kind of a teaser with washed up debris to navigate around.

Good to see folks in your area are coming out in pretty good shape. Sure could have been a lot worse - and I'm thankful for you that it wasn't. South Louisiana is a different story.
