2020 150 Montauk Fuel Tank Removal From Under Helm Seat

Postby boatsmith » Fri Dec 03, 2021 3:39 pm

Give me a suggestion [for a method to reduced the difficulty to remove the fuel tank from under the helm seat on a 2020 150 MONTAUK boat].

Thanks.

BACKSTORY
[On my 2020 150 MONTAUK boat] in hot weather I have great difficulty getting out the 12-gallon fuel from under the helm seat. The problem is expansion of the tank. The vent on the tank does not work well. With the tank expanded, the tank's cap restricts pulling it out.

Also, to reach in and remove the tank cap when the tank is under the helm seat is very hard.

Releasing the vent also does not help, and the vent is also very difficult to reach.

Consider modifying the seat base to add an inspection hatch that you can open and service the tank from above.

Does the fuel tank on the 150 MONTAUK sit directly on the deck?

Or, is there a mat below the tank?

Sits directly on deck, no mat. Strapped in underneath the helm seat.

FYI - The current design of vented fuel caps are not mechanical vents. Twisting the screw allows the air to escape when and only when the pressure inside the tank reaches 5 psi per the EPA regulation.

If the tank has expanded due to heat, loosen the full cap to release the pressure so that you can shift the tank.

You can replace the cap with a old style manual vented cap to reduce the frequency of tank expansion.
