Website Updates

Postby jimh » Thu Dec 09, 2021 3:47 pm

I have revised the search page used to search the Old Forum and other content that is not part of this forum to utilize the DuckDuckGo searching method. There are two advantages:
  • the DuckDuckGo search does not produce any tracking data about the user or the search keywords, and
  • the search is a conglomerate search primarily using BING and some other non-Google search engines.
I undertook this change because the former search website (Google) had become so cluttered with paid placement search results, that even searches for continuouswave.com specific resources tended to be pushed down in the results due to paid placements. Also, the user tracking was becoming annoying.

Please enjoy the new website's Search page at

https://continuouswave.com/whaler/search.html

The move to DuckDuckGo was suggested by our excellent moderator, Phil T.

The new search form was coded by me, after struggling with it for a few days in many beta versions.

Website Updates

Postby jimh » Thu May 05, 2022 12:09 pm

The REFERENCE section of the website has been updated to include the Evinrude Predelivery and Rigging Guides for the E-TEC legacy and E-TEC G2 engines. See

https://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/

The Rigging Guides can be downloaded from

Evinrude E-TEC Rigging Guides
https://continuouswave.com/whaler/refer ... uides.html

These rigging guides are essential for installing and rigging E-TEC engines.

The index page for REFERENCE has also been reorganized to make topics more hierarchical and easier to find.

A new article on the Evinrude E-TEC G2 engines has been added to the REFERENCE section at

Evinrude E-TEC G2 Engines
https://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/ETECG2.html

This article discusses some of the unusual designs employed in the G2 models.

This article also preserves engine specification sheets, gives explanations of many feature names, and gives some analysis of the engine power output as a function of displacement and other features.

I have reverted the search page to use the GOOGLE.COM search as it had been doing for over a decade. The prior search used for a few months is still available.

For more about the reasons for this change, please read this article:

MONDAY, MAY 15, 2023

Something has gone awry with the forum hosting. I am working on the problem. There seems to be a loss of data after about May 7, 2023.

I am working with the hosting company to remedy this problem.

UPDATE on May 15, 2023 problem with data loss.

The hosting provider acknowledged that the restoration of the website resulted in a loss of data due to the their use of an older backup. Unfortunately, there does not seem to be an alternative.

Any forum post after about May 8, 2023 to May 14, 2023 has been lost.

There were some very useful posts in that two week period, and to have lost that data is unfortunate.

All these problems were created by the web hosting company, so I am not particularly happy with them. I am looking for an alternative web hosting provider, but making a change like that is going to be a huge task. I have to say, I am getting a bit discouraged by the increasingly complicated world of trying to provide a web forum. There are a myriad of little problems going on with the current arrangement, and getting them resolved has been difficult. I will continue to try to resolve these problems, but with the Summer and boating season coming on, they may not be fixed as soon as I would like. I do have to get up north and do some boating soon.

I doubt any of us will be terribly inconvenienced by losing access to the data. I enjoy your site as a place to learn and to share some of what I've learned. I suspect your other members have similar motivations for being here. I also enjoy the fellowship.
