Rib-side OUTRAGE Value

Postby Snowboard » Tue Jan 25, 2022 9:43 pm

What would a good rib-side Outrage hull be worth in Massachusetts?

The OUTRAGE 21 models with the ribbed hull sides were the earlier boats, made c.1970. Those hull are now about 50-years old. There is no basis to fix a price on a 50-year-old hull without knowing the condition. Condition will determine value.

Today's market for used boats has driven prices upward. Even before the new post-COVID used boat prices, excellent c.1970 OUTRAGE 21 hulls with good engines on good trailers were being advertised at prices above $40,000. What buyers would actually pay is unknown to me.

Have you ever been aboard an OUTRAGE 21? The boat is quite nice in calm water, but on any sort of waves it rides like a surfboard.

Thank you Jim, I had not really considered that the ride would be a concern, but obviously it makes quite a bit of sense given the flat-looking [hull] design that was eventually changed.

I guess I’m back to the hunt for a restored or restorable classic Montauk hull.

Appreciate your thoughts.--Steve

You should read an article on the OUTRAGE 21 from when it was first introduced. I have reproduced an interesting article at

As for a MONTAUK, the way prices are going lately, many less-than-20-year-old used 170 MONTAUK boats are selling for more than their original MSRP. When the 170 MONTAUK came out in 2002, it was priced below the classic MONTAUK 17, and the new model's base price was $17,655. I very much doubt you could buy a used 170 MONTAUK right now for that price; the sellers will be asking much more.

Compare at:

2002 MONTAUK 170
https://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/170Montauk/

Used and rather old MONTAUK 17 boats vary in price. A huge influence on price is the engine on the transom. A old smokey, noisy, two-stroke-power-cycle engine on the transom and a rusty old trailer will reduce the price for a MONTAUK 17. A boat with a modern 90-HP that now costs $10,000 (if you can find one) will boost the used boat price significantly.

There was a time--maybe 10 or 15-years ago--when you could buy a nice MONTAUK 17 in the range of $10,000 to $15,000. Now those same boats, and those boats are now 10 or 15-years older, will probably sell for as much if not more than they did back then.

Well I was able to find a really nice restored classic Montauk 17 with no engine so I will have to start a new thread with the pics and questions!

Jim, I have several general different category questions from Bimini top options to rigging/prop choices for a Honda BF90, is it best to just keep it all in one thread or break up the requests into the specific segments?

Figured it would be better to ask in advance, thanks!
