2002 170 Montauk Center Console Height

Postby cosmicstream » Sat Apr 16, 2022 9:19 am

I have had my sights on getting either a Montauk or Outrage for while. I have finally come across a quality 2002 170 Montauk—the year of the new model 170 MONTAUK.

I have found that in 2004 changes were made to raise the center console height as there were complaints that it was too low. My height is 6-feet 2-inches.

The boat is a 10-hour drive from me. I am trying to avoid making that drive to see it in person until after a completed marine survey.

Q1: With my height and the this potentially problematic console being borderline too low for me, what do you guys think?

I'm planning on making an offer, but before making the decision about what way I am going to go with this, I figured I'd come and ask the question here. I am not sure if anyone can help me out with this question but it would be greatly appreciated if anyone has any knowledge to share

I have 2002 Montauk 170, among the first hulls built of the 170 model. I am 6 feet tall and don't think it is too low for me and don't regret not having the taller center console. (Not sure about the 2004 date, it could be 2008). Most features in boats include a tradeoff and you have to evaluate which side is more beneficial to your boating life. For one, my 2002 Montauk 170 can fit in my garage with the top of the console just slipping below the garage door. Also my boating is typically an mix of planing speed where I am standing, so a taller console would be beneficial, but the other half of a day could be motoring through steerage speed zones where sitting is more likely and a shorter console is preferred.

I found the 170 Montauk model year 2003 to 2007console to be too low for me. My height is 6-feet 2-inches

I stand at the helm 95-percent of the time.

The change was made for 2008 and newer boats.

I’m 6’5” and own a 2006 Montauk 170 for the last 3 years… sure, the console might be a little more comfortable if higher, but used Montauk 170 is so hard to find don’t let a few inches scare you away.

I fish from spot to spot so no big deal. It’s a non concern.
