Fuel line opening under RPS, 1985 Montauk 17

I recently rescued a 1985 Montauk 17 from the junkyard. Figure 1 shows the deck opening, located under the RPS, for the fuel line to enter the rigging tunnel.

The opening is protected by a plastic flange. The flange does not cover the aft end of the opening where plywood and foam are exposed and badly weathered.

How is this opening supposed to be set up?

Take that one off. Use West system, Epoxy the cut out sides to prevent water seepage. Mix up a golf ball amount, use plastic paint putty knife to smear. Top side paint or gel coat, allow to cure. Go to specialtymarine.com and order a stainless Horza, used on the older outrage models. Pricey, but Fits perfectly. Really sets the look off on the deck with it being polished 316ss. Cover the inner flange with GE 30 year clear silicon, better and cleaner than 4200/5200. Also not permanent. Stick it on and screw it down.

That is to act as a chafe guard.

I agree with "old" in that it should be removed and the exposed edge should be sealed.

An easy-to-use product that comes in a complementary color is Locktite Marine Epoxy in white. Mix it and apply with a small brush. Reinstall the chafe guard.

Note - every screw into the hull should be sealed. Remove each one, place a dab of Boat Life's Life Caulk in the hole and a dab under the head (if it touches the deck) and reinstall.
