1981 OUTRAGE V-20 Wavy Hull Sides

Postby HARO14 » Fri May 06, 2022 3:29 pm

I’m may buy a 1981 Outrage V-20 with a Yamaha 150-HP V6 engine. In c.2016 the cockpit deck and the fuel l tank were replaced.

I have owned several boats, but never a Boston Whaler. The hull on this 1981 Outrage V-20 boat has some waves on the aft one-third of the hull side.
I have read that [this distortion in the hull side was caused by] foam shrinking in the epoch 1980 to 1982.

Q1: is a wavy hull side on a c.1981 Boston Whaler to be worried about?

Q2: are there wood stringers in a c.1981 Boston Whaler?

I want to figure out what I should look for that could be a potential defect in this a c.1981 1981 Outrage V-20.

Any input provided will be appreciated.
Thank you

Please read the FAQ at

No.

The only wood in the interior of a Boston Whaler Unibond hull is generally marine plywood used to reinforce the transom, and wood and other reinforcement materials placed into the laminated hull and inner hull components during construction to add stiffness and to provide a suitable anchor for holding screw fasteners that will attach other components and hardware to the hull and deck.

For every hull, there is a corresponding Wood Locating Diagram. See a list of diagrams archived here and available at

For more information about the OUTRAGE V-20, read my REFERENCE article on that hull at

The OUTRAGE V-20 hull was the first Boston Whaler V-hull design. It is an easily drive very moderate dead rise V-hull boat. A main propulsion engine of 150-HP should be able to accelerate the boat to 42-MPH.
