1998 GUARDIAN 22 Engine Shaft Length

Postby LMKP » Wed May 11, 2022 10:27 am

I plan to re-power my 1996 GUARDIAN 22 boat. In a manual for boats produced after 2005, the engine shaft length is specified as 25-inches or the extra-long or XL shaft.

For my 1996 GUARDIAN 22 should I used a 25-inch shaft engine or a different shaft length engine?

Thank you all for your kind feedback.

Engine Shaft length in inches and name protocol
    Short = 15
    Long = 20
    XLong = 25
    XXLong = 30

If your manual is telling you to purchase a specific length shaft, I'm not sure whey you'd consider purchasing a different length.

Why don't you measure the transom to validate the shaft length needed?

Thanks for the reply. I explained myself badly.

To clarify my question: are the engine shaft lengths for the 2003 model year GUARDIAN 22--which is the manual I have--and the 1996 model year GUARDIAN 22 (the boat I have) the same?

If so, definitely i will follow the factory recommended shaft length.

Also, thank you for the lengths and picture--very clear representation.

Are you re-powering with twin engines or a single engine?

Generally for Boston Whaler V-hull boats there will be a different shaft length depending on single engine or twin engine.

Some commercial hulls can require a single engine to be a 30-inch shaft length. However, in 1998 I don't think there were 30-inch-shaft engines available. Most likely, if a single engine re-power, a 25-inch shaft will be appropriate.

Measure the shaft length of the current engine as illustrated above. Also look for the model designator on the current engine. The model designator usually encodes the shaft length with an S, L, or XL character.

If the GUARDIAN 22 has a notched transom, the proper shaft length would be 25-inches for single engine, and 20-inches for twin engines. Some GUARDIAN boats may have a straight transom--no notch--and they would use a 30-inch shaft engine for single and 25-inches for twin engines.

Another reason he should be measuring the transom. Too many variables at play.
