1998 OUTRAGE Leak

Postby mpmegginson » Sat Jun 18, 2022 10:02 pm

I have a 1998 Outrage [of unspecified length--give the full model name including length designator].

[When] water comes over the transom, the transom hatch leaks.

Of course, the bilge pump takes care of [the water].

There must be a way to keep [the transom hatch on a 1998 OUTRAGE of unspecified length] from leaking.

I do not want to replace [the transom hatch] if replacement is not necessary.

I have replaced the gasket; [the new gasket] made no difference [in the leaking of the transom hatch].

[Give me a remedy for the leak in the transom hatch of a 1990 OUTRAGE of unspecified length.]

Your description of "transom hatch" makes no sense. The transom is a vertical structural part of the hull. To have a hatch in the transom would be very unusual. Perhaps you are talking about some sort of small opening in the engine splash well area, a deck access plate or something similar.

Please describe the component you are seeking advice for using terms other than "transom hatch."

Also, please give the full model name of the boat including the length designator.

Many Outrage and Conquest models in the 1990's through today have an inspection hatch and access ports in the floor of the splashwell. Over many years of exposure to salt water and the elements, the gasket can wear and not maintain a seal.

The 1998 Outrage 21 has three hatches in the splashwell as do the Outrage 23, Outrage 24 and Outrage 26. Their Conquest cousins did as well.

I worked with several Outrage/Conquest owners from Australia recently to find a solution to their leaking hatches. After much searching and contacting vendors, it was decided to replace the large inspection hatches with locally available ones. Shipping from the US was too time consuming, and expensive.

O rings for the round hatches can be made up using rubber O ring material.

Replacing the entire hatch is not terribly difficult and can be done DIY at a slip.

Sorry for the poor description, but its the hatch in the floor of the splash well, right in front of the transom. Thanks Phil T.
