Removing sealer from gelcoat

Postby gr8wood123 » Mon Sep 19, 2022 5:37 pm

Hello, I am finally getting back to my 1966 17 foot
Eastport. I bought this boat from a friends widow a few years ago.

While he owned the boat he put a sealer on the gelcoat both inside and outside. It was one of those polymers that was advertised on TV as apply once and forge it. Basically it was the “as seen on TV product”. When I first bought the boat I didn’t really care about it, but now I want to get it off. I recall reading on this forum years ago, that the only way to get the stuff off was using a heavy duty floor stripper. I wondering if anybody remembers the product and exactly what was used to remove it. I’ve tried the search bar but I’ve come up with nothing. The stuff is like iron you can’t even sand it off. Thank you!

I have seen others use Poli-Strip to remove the Poli Glow product, but due to the price usually get the same results from ZEP Heavy Duty Floor Wax Remover.
Sanding will get it off also and may be what you need in the end.
