I just picked up a 1994 Montauk [17—always include the length in a model description]. My son and I are planning to restore the boat. It seems to be original.

The 1994 MONTAUK 17 has a leaning post. I have never seen a leaning post like this leaning post.

Also, the boat does not have a bow railing, and it never did.

I did not think you could get a Montauk 17 in 1994 without a bow rail.

The previous owner thought the boat may have been a Coast Guard or DNR boat.

Look at Figure 1 and give me comments.

Your boat is a Commercial Products Division (CPD) Guardian 17 made for a commercial customer. CPD had a book of options for seating, consoles and hardware but many boats were truly custom.

It could have been built with a rail, the recreational or commercial version and removed later or none at all.

Montauk 17 production ended in 2002.

Please post a photo-image which shows the OEM hull decal that declares the boat to be a MONTAUK 17.

As seen in Figure 2, when the boat left the factory, Boston Whaler’s model designation was the boat was a MONTAUK 17.

How the boat came to have the unusual seating is unknown. Perhaps a dealer made a special order for the boat.

For a dealer, particularly a long-time dealer who sells high volume of boats, to be able to get some unique features on an otherwise standard model is actually not unsusual, particularly back in the 1990’s when this boat was made.

The boat has been cleaned and put in the water for the first time. The fun was short lived as we took advantage of the good weather to winterized the boat and put it away for the winter. This Spring we plan to remove all the sticker residue remaining from the boats previous life.
