170 MONTAUK: Brown Water Under Console

Postby Crossfire » Thu Dec 29, 2022 3:07 am

I have a Montauk 170 and during rougher rides a small amount (around 1 cup) of brown water comes out from inside the console. The water has a rusty appearance and comes from the smaller and more forward wiring tube used for sending the navigation lamp circuit forward. I cannot work out where the water is coming from and why it has a rusty appearance. This is my third Boston Whaler, so I have some experience, but this has me stumped.

I have drained the water from the tubes with a pump but it comes back.

The boat is completely dry otherwise and the hull does not feel waterlogged.

There is no speedometer and the water pipe for the speedometer has been terminated on the engine.

Any thoughts?

Cheers

Andrew

Does the rusty water smell bad?

If there is no bad odor in the water, it is just dirty water.

If the water has an acrid odor it could be a mix of water and some uncured resin or foam, leaking from the foam interior of the Unibond hull via a screw fastener hole with poor seal.
