I am close to purchasing a new E-TEC 90. I have never liked white engines, as they always get scum on them when you tilt them up. Graphite or White?

White is clearly a better color with a white hull. For tan hull a little less so. It seems that white is a preferred color with white hulls along the central southern coast.
The major advantage is that white makes it far easier to know when the engine needs a good cleaning. It is also easier on the hands when touching the cowling in the summer sunshine.;=)

It depends on the hull. If it's an older model with blue interior, I would go with white. My opinion is that the white engines look better on the older hulls since they look more like the older OMC engines. There are advantages and disadvantages to each cowling color. The graphite will be less likely to show scum as well as grease stains. It sounds like you have a preference for the graphite, so go with it.

I just had a white E-TEC 90 hung on my 1981 Montauk. It looks just like the Johnson it is replacing.--Al

If you do not like white engine cowlings, I think your choice should be the non-white cowling, unless you dislike graphic more than you dislike white.

I went with white, I actually don't mind the color. It's more I hope I don't have to keep a pile of rags on the boat to keep the E-TEC looking clean. --- It will live on a buoy and dock so, won't get washed down every trip.

White. That is what I have on my 15' GLS II commercial lay up which is white. Have a red prop... really looks good.
