Bottom Paint

Q1: what bottom paint is appropriate [for a 1997 MONTAUK 17 boat whose hull has just been repaired]?
If “bottom paint” means an anti-fouling paint to prevent marine growth, then check with local boaters or marine suppliers for recommendations. Typically the choice of anti-fouling bottom paint depends on the seawater in which the boat will be continually immersed. If “bottom paint” means a water-resistant protective paint to prevent water from being absorbed by the hull gel coat and possibly causing osmotic blisters, then read the owner’s manual for specific instructions regarding WHEN a protective bottom paint is necessary and how to apply it.

Most boats that are kept on trailers do not need nor do their owners apply protective bottom paint. See the remarks in the owner’s manual.
When a prospective buyer sees a boat for sale that really had no need for a dark color of anti-fouling paint on its bottom but has such paint, a possible reaction might be to speculate about what might be hidden or obscured beneath the unnecessary anti-fouling paint.
If “bottom paint” means something other than anti-fouling paint or water-resistant protective paint, then consult with various paint companies for their recommended paints specifically designed for hull bottoms as opposed to “topside” paints. These “bottom” paints might possess admirable qualities that could be advantageous.
