APPRAISAL: 1969 16-footer

Postby Keyaskom » Sun Apr 17, 2022 9:11 pm

[Moved to MARKETPLACE as the thread evolved into a request for APPRAISAL of a particular boat--Moderator]

I may buy a 1969 16-footer that was restored by the current owner. The engine is model year 2003 and almost looks new; the trailer is new and has never been in water. A custom cover is included.

APPRAISAL: What is a fair price for this boat?

What model is this boat?

The 16-foot hull is no longer any particular Boston Whaler model. It is now a customized 1969 16-foot hull.

The Boston Whaler decals are much larger than original size.

The fuel tank under the leaning post appears to have no fuel hose connected to it.

The center console does not look like it was made by Boston Whaler, and its color does not match the hull paint.

The interior of the 16-foot hull shown has been modified with the introduction of an aftermarket or non-OEM console and leaning post. When a factory interior has been changed, the model name is called "Custom."

The photos show a decent trailer, a nice classic Yamaha 90 2-stroke, and a clean interior. Not a bad setup, based on the photos.

If you do elect to purchase it, verify the hull drains have been replaced and replace the imitation decals with the originals from http://www.magicbrushsign.com You will save yourself from comments from every Whaler owner you will come across.

The boat [appears to be] very clean all over. The console looks like a TODD brand. I prefer a seat with a back to a leaning post. Railings and navigation lamps would complete it.

Given it is missing the original elements I would say [a fair price is between] $6,000 to $8,000

An 16-footer with a weathered interior would be $9,000 to $10,000

What is the basis for determining the boat was a 1969 model year?

The value of an engine cannot be determined without a seal trial. Appearance and the ability to run on a hose adaptor will not establish the true condition of the engine.

[The seller] was told the [model] year by a previous owner.

There is a number on the transom, but I forgot to write it down when looking at the boat.

[The seller is] asking $8,000. From what I’ve seen listed here in New Jersey, that is a good deal.

My assessment of value:
  • the new and never used trailer is worth $1,200
  • the engine, if really a 90-HP and really in excellent condition, is worth $2,300
  • the leaning post is worth $700
  • the new larger fuel tank is worth $100
That totals $4,300 of value. If the boat sells for $8,000, then the hull represents only $3,700 of value. That seems like a reasonable price for the hull.

I may purchase [the 1969 16-footer] if sea trial goes well.

Tested and purchased the boat today! It ran excellent, very quick and nimble. I’m excited to learn and work on the Whaler. Thank you all for your replies and help!
